Well, I'm still bumming around CA and between houses. On this visit to my parents' house, there are two messed up machines. I've already got one thread open and running about my Mom's computer, and I believe it's near cleaned up. Now I've plugged in my External HD to my Dad's to move some files around, but I notice Firefox is all gummed up and running super slow. In fact, downloads of pix or files is super slow, so is switching between tabs with, say 15 tabs open. The total RAM eaten up by it is significant, but shouldn't be a big deal. Since I plugged in the HDD before I noticed problems, I'm worried I got something on all of my data too.

So having been down this road before, I've already run Combofix and ESET just to see what they'd come up with. I see that they've detected all of my rar files that look shady on my G Drive, but I live in THailand usually, and we use cracked files all the time. I'm not so concerned about them, but if you'd like to see me dump them, maybe I will. I really do not like the C Drive Trojan Horse that's been detected. I have a feeling it's up to all kinds of stuff slowing me down and maybe grabbing my info - which sucks 'cause I have to do alot of online banking n EBay stuff while here.

Here are my reports right off the bat. I appreciate all of the help I've received and will gladly do what you need me to do next.

And btw, I'm into learning how these different programs work and understanding the analysis findings. Feel free to educate me a little bit each time so I can become more and more independent, and confident using these programs myself to maintain machine health.

Hello ,
And :welcome: to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum
. My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.
You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply
  • A detailed description of your problems
  • A new DDS log (don't forget attach.txt)

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

regards, Elise

You admit you are using cracked files all the time. This is not only illegal, but also a sure way to keep yourself infected, in which case it doesn't make much sense to continue cleaning your system.

What is more, its quite likely that our tools detect/remove cracks and the like. Please consider this and let me know if you wish to continue cleaning this machine.

TWO ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS
---------------------------------------
I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG or MS Security Essentials.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise. Several topics are running here. Let's address them one-by-one.

1) I understand about the risks of cracked programs and what it means to acquire/run a cracked program. I do this at my own risk - understood. I do this however, only on my own machine back in my country, not here in the US. I have my back-up portable HD with me, and it is part of what we are scanning and if there is something there detected or disliked by a an antimalware/virus program, I have no problem deleting it.

2) I am at my parents' house now and their main computer is infected by that trojan virus as those initial scans I posted show. I would like to proceed with whatever scanning and cleaning procedures are necessary to clean/remove that threat.

3) I understand that malware can travel from one device to another, and that's why I've left my external HD plugged in to the main computer, as I accessed some files on it after I had already noticed trouble with the main computer. I'm wishing I hadn't plugged it in now, but it's already done.

4) I've removed Microsoft Security Essentials as I found it to be a poor program that was allowing bad things in before - eg my first 2 threads on this forum about 2 months ago. I had kept the machine clean with AVG and
the Winpatrol program. I have no idea what put this new thing on the computer. Both of my parents and I use it, and my elderly parents tend to click on alot of spam without realizing what they are doing.

Are you ok with AVG and Winpatrol on the machine at the same time ? I believe one is a scanner and the other is a realtime blocker for malware and that they work together, not against each other. If you need one removed, I would remove Winpatrol and keep AVG Free as I believe it is more powerful.

5) Please give me instructions what to download and scan with next.

Thanks.

Winpatrol does indeed work fine with an antivirus scanner, it is an antispyware scanner.

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Hi, that looks clean now, so no more autorun infections present.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise. Sorry to bother, but I forget whether I had my external HD plugged in as well when I did the Combofix run yesterday. So I've done it again so you can look at everything. From what I see, there's nothing to reference my external HD - called the "G Drive" by the computer. (I had unplugged it as I don't trust my parents not to do something terrible to the computer if I'm not around, and I fear losing all of my data.) In the case that it matters, I wanted to run Combofix on everything before proceeding further.

So here I've run Combofix again. Does it look clean still ? If so I'll proceed with the next steps you've already asked me to do. Just tell me it's good and I'll start those next steps as soon as you get back to me.

THanks.

I still AVG and MSSE installed, can you please verify using Add/Remove programs which one is still installed. We can then remove the remnants of the other one.

How are things running at this point? Please do also the TDSSkiller steps.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise.

The TDSSKiller came back with nothing found, so maybe I'm clean. It didn't give me a report.

I don't understand what step we did that got rid of the problem I first wrote about:
ESET
C:\Documents and Settings\MLW\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\38\2bffcb66-49497fc2 a variant of Java/Exploit.Agent.NAY trojan

Which program cleaned that up ? Though I don't understand much compared to you guys, I can usually tell when a program is detecting, quarantining or removing malware. In this case I don't know which program did it. Would you please tell me ?

To your last question - I want to run only AVG on this computer, and meant to remove all of MS Security. How do I get rid of the last bits that are still in the registry or wherever you saw them ?

Are there any other steps/scans to be sure the computer is clean ?

Thanks in advance.

The detected object was located in java cache and most likely a single instance.

CF-SCRIPT
-------------
We need to execute a CF-script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Start > Run and in the box that opens type notepad and press enter. Copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
SecCenter::
{BCF43643-A118-4432-AEDE-D861FCBCFCDF}

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Finally, please launch MBAM, update it and run a full scan. Post me the resulting log.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise, I'm still here. I've had a few busy days, and will get on this by tonight and have something for you asap. I'm eager to finish, as maybe you are. Thanks for your patience.
