I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, and I'm moving at about a third the speed I should be. CTRL-ALT-DEL shows everything is fine, only slightly elevated, and I can't find anything too out of the ordinary. So naturally, I can only assume I have something nasty. Malwarebytes (run 2 days ago) shows everything is fine. I've had this problem for a few weeks now.

Keyboard and mouse acting up as well.

Thanks in advance for helping!

-Lugs

Update: Had a major crash as I was posting this topic. Windows Explorer keeps "not responding" and svchost is taking up as much memory as firefox and malwarebytes. (I'm running a new scan right now)

Download Bootkit Remover to your desktop.

  • Unzip downloaded file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on boot_cleaner.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users, right click on boot_cleaner.exe and click Run As Administrator).
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
  • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  • Press CTRL+C
  • Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
  • Post the output back here.

================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Alright. So, when I run boot_cleaner.exe, I get a warning window.

ATA_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT is not supported by your disk controller.
SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT will be use for disk I/O

However, here is the information from the window anyway.

Question- in January I had a nasty rootkit attack that left my computer limping even after bringing the issue to bleepingcomputer.com. My system was badly damaged and I reinstalled Windows 7 with no product key, as it is a second hand computer and didn't come with the original information anywhere.

Is it likely that the slowness/strangeness is a result of using a hacked OS? Would it have shown up sooner were that the case? It's been fine for months (until the past 2-3 weeks).

And do you know a way to legitimize Windows 7 without forking out for a new install?

I don't see anything malicious and since this is illegal Windows installation, unfortunately I can't help you anymore.

Unfortunately not.
