Hello everyone,

About a week or so ago, I had a very slow connection, so I looked into upgrading my router firmware, which was successful and then I reset my router to the factory settings. I then switched from WPA-TPIK to WPA2-AES, as I heard AES is more secure, and I have tried switching them back, but to no avail. I am also having trouble uploading large size videos, no matter which site I used. I can upload anything 10-170 mb, but anything bigger and it keeps failing. On some I was getting an "IO error" which upon looking online, some said it could be a bad hard drive section.

I just replaced the drive in my laptop, and I did some scans on it using Seagate Tools, and all looks great with the hard drive.

The only thing I can think of is a router error. I can browse the web fine, and my speed has improved, but I continue having the large file upload issue. Do I need to buy a new router? Call my internet company? Or another road all together?
Any help on where should I go next would be greatly appreciated! =D (and I hope this all makes sense :)

I am at work, so am unable to get all of the specs now, but here is what I can give you:

Make and model of computer - Dell XPS L502X

How the computer is connected (wireless or wired) - Wireless

Make and model of Router - Netgear 54MBPS (will have to get specific model once home)

Approximate Distance From the router the PC is if its a wireless connection - Not too far. Router is in kitchen, laptop is in living room, and sometimes across the house in the bedroom. Problem seems to happen no matter where I have PC.

What type of internet you have (Dsl, Cable, T-1,etc..) - DSL

I will run the minitoolbox once I am home

Will wait till you have the mini-toolbox.

And have you made sure that all your drivers are updated?

When do you get the IO Error?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computuer

About a week or so ago, I had a very slow connection, so I looked into upgrading my router firmware, which was successful and then I reset my router to the factory settings. I then switched from WPA-TPIK to WPA2-AES, as I heard AES is more secure, and I have tried switching them back, but to no avail.

On routers sometimes updating the firmware will help. In this case it did, When you hard reset the router to factory setting usually it will roll back to initial release firmware. Can you please check if you have updated version. On the Wireless key WPA & WPA2 is a password encryption. WPA2 is what I have and ACLs to connect to my network I am very sensitive to security.

WPA and WPA2 are just password keys to authenticate to the router so you can pass data. WPA 2 is more hacker proof but It can take a while to hack it but dont worry.

I can upload anything 10-170 mb, but anything bigger and it keeps failing. On some I was getting an "IO error" which upon looking online, some said it could be a bad hard drive section.

Your DSL provider may limit you to uploading more than 500MB during one upload but let check you hard drive before we assume that

Sometimes a "i/o" error can be solve by de-fragging Let try to de-fragmentation your hard drive

I've also seen uploads fail due to I/O errors caused by the remote server.

To eliminate this possibility, try uploading the SAME file to a site such as megaupload(oops, lol), RapidShare, etc.

Thank you everyone for all of your responses! :)

I rec'd the IO Error when I was using the z-o-o-m uploader program. I downloaded & ran spybot, avast, and malwarebytes thinking this could be the issue, but it still persisted since.
I will try using RapidShare and see what happens with that :)

And here is the what the MiniToolBox reported:

Here is the Speccy snapshot: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/wW33WHGqkAtfQ6TzoUvVtRb

edit: tried uploading to RapidShare, and the file just quit, similar to what it did on other host :(

Yes, I can, it still shows up as being a wireless network, is that normal? I using the web now like that. Upon testing my download speed is normal, but my upload speed is terrible, it's only @ 6-10kbps, when I normally get 45kbps a second

Can you perform a speed test with the computer directly connected to the router:

http://www.speedtest.net

upload the pictures.

Please do 3 tests with wired and 3 tests via wifi.

Do the requested speedtests first.

Then plug your computer directly into the modem. See what the upload speed is when connected to the modem.

WHat are you paying for as part of your plan?

For example, I pay for 45Megabit up and down for my internet. You should have a similar looking plan.

Your upload is rather slow.

I have the lowest Century Link DSL @ 1.5 mbps, but my downloads have never been near there, and my uploads would usually run about 45kbps, but just recently they've started failing halfway, no matter which host I use. And it's always on the bigger size files. :(

For your download on those you would take 370kilobits and divide it by 8 to get your kilobytes a second.
