SMART HDD virus resulting in Internet explorer not working

I had a problem with a smart hdd virus that has resulted in internet explorer problems.
I managed to remove what i thought was the virius and thought I had cured the virus, but ever since I have been having Internet issues.
Initially i can connect but after connecting to one page i always get the "internet explorer cannot display the webpage"

I followed a post running fss.exe and afd.sys, but as my log file was different I didn't want to follow the subsequent steps.

I have attached the resulting log files for analysis.

Winsock fix

Launch it ,Click on FIX

Restart your PC after it gets completed

Check your browser.If that doesnt work try this


PLEASE create a restore point before trying this

Please copy the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad:


REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2]





Open a notepad ,copy the script,save it as

Filename:winsock.reg
save as type:All files


Launch it and click YES to add it to registry

After that, Reboot your computer.

After the restart,

Go to Network Connections
Right click on your normal connection icon, and choose Properties
Click the Install button
Choose Protocol then click Add
Click Have disk
In the drop down box, type in: C:\WINDOWS\INF and click OK
In the next dialog, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click OK
Click Close to leave the properties box

After that, restart your computer and see if you can browse now.

Re run minitoolbox and post the new log

I've Completed the winsock fix and all seems to be restored, thanks for that.

I forgot to mention that my USB ports don't appear to be functioning either as when I plug in my iPod etc I do not get a response, iTunes does not launch and it is not visible from my computer as a removable device?

Did this happen after malware removal? Can you post the logs.

Hi Naren and tks for your help so far.

Actually the Internet problem has come back again. 1st time after my last post, which seemed to happen after I tried to open other applications, they then hung so I restarted and on the restart the Internet failed to work as before. 2nd time It happens after I ran winsock again and it worked momentarily, but then the browser just shut down of its own accord and again I could not and still cannot browse. :-(

With regards to the USB issue I can't exactly say when it started but I think it coincides with the whole smart hdd virus and removal.

Based on all of the above, which logs would you like me to post.

Launch it.Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system

Click on "Scan".Please post the LOG report(log file should be in your C drive)


Please download GMER from here(doesnot work on 64 bit OS)

Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.

GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic Full Scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)

If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.

Launch it, allow it to download latest Avast! virus definitions
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.After scan finishes,click on Save log

Hi Naren

I downloaded and launched FIXTDSS successfully. I then followed the instructions for GMER and it was scanning for some time over an hour and then it crashed to blue screen of death. I then restarted and tried to browse and so far it has been OK, I even got responses from usb's.
I'm not sure if it will last and I haven't run the aswMBR. Do you think I should run GMER again? As it crashed I obviously didn't get to save the log files, what do you think?

You were still infected that was causing browsing issues.FIXTDSS has removed rootkit.Now you should be safe.
