In the past, I was inundated with popups, sometimes appearing even when I was away from my computer. Since I have kids, they probably surf to places and pick up stuff along the way. I finally got tired of IE, so I changed the proxy setting inside the connections tab to "fakeproxy" in order to disable the use of IE (since it cannot be removed). I then installed Firefox and have been fairly happy, although I still feel like my computer is slow, when I try to open an application or browse my hard drive. Online browsing hasn't been too bad. For example, just opening up Microsoft Word, shows nothing on the screen for about a minute, then the window appears. Clicking on My Computer can often take minutes instead of seconds.

A few weeks ago, I was copying some music from my own purchased CD onto my hard drive, and there is a feature that connects from Windows Media Player to retrieve the names and titles of albums and songs, so that the resulting files have more descriptive names than just "track 1", "track 2", etc. Well just in the time that I removed the "fakeproxy" setting, in order for this information to be collected, and left it that way for a couple of days, my computer got much worse. The desktop image was changed to a big yellow banner telling me to buy SPYGUARD, and was completely hanging my computer. I was able to get rid of some of the stuff, but I still have an extremely slow computer, especially in areas like My Computer, Disk Clean, and any time I have multiple applications open. I have used Ad-Aware several times, and its finally returning a clean list. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy, and it found tons of stuff. I rebooted, and Ad-Aware is still clean, Spybot still found Peper, WildTangent, DoubleClick, Awenuw A, and ATLEvents, all of which it removed.

I read the suggestions of which anti virus tools to try, and since I am still nervous about re-enabling IE, i used the Trend Micro House Call, since it supports Firefox. It just hung for hours and never gets past the "Updating and Starting House Call" screen, which would seem to illustrate how bad off my computer is right now.

Some things I have noticed, which may or may not be useful, and may even show my ignorance on the subject of viruses, but nevertheless:

If I look at performance and processes, it appears that something called docsrv.exe will periodically take a large percentage of the CPU, even when nothing else is happening. Iexplore.exe is almost always there, even though I am not running internet explorer at any time. I remove it, and it comes back. Other suspect processes are hjkao.exe xolgxpr7.exe xej7.exe kyjnpe.exe and i6lpc.exe some of which I have killed just to see what would happen, and there hasn't been any noticable impact.

Here is a log, any help would be appreciated greatly!!

Do you have admin rights on the machine and is your XP an 32-bit edition? As for the edition, you can find out by right-clicking on your desktop, choose Properties and go to the settings tab. Let me know.. I'm asking because there is a tool I'd like to use on this -- and these are system requirements. :thumbsup:

Something has improved, because the docsrv.exe process is no longer around, and my overall performance has improved considerably. I also noticed a big difference in the number of processes running. Are there any items still in the hijackthis log that I should remove?

As far as the 32-bit, I did what you said, and right-clicking on the Desktop shows me the Display properties, but you asked about the XP edition. Not sure if this is what you were asking, but it did say 32-bit color. for the Display settings. Did you mean something else? thanks!

I meant just that. So if you use an account that has Admin privileges on the machine, let's do this:

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract Avenger.exe to your desktop.
2. Copy all the text in bold contained in the code box below to a blank notepad file:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpsu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RmtQCB55.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Help\disktcp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\megerian\LOCALS~1\Temp\vrscod.dat

Folders to delete:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dpi\

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to the notepad file into this window
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, create a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste all the contents of avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply. :thumbsup:

You don't have an Antivirus program running. That would be our next step... :thumbsup:
==

Anyhow:

Please get free version of AVG here.

Download & install it, configure it how you wish, update it. Next, run a scan with it (set it to scan everything it can). Remove/quarantine everything found. Reboot.

==

Run a scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dpi] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dpi\dpi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [disktcp] C:\WINDOWS\Help\disktcp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2LRX2W83X2T3MQ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\RmtQCB55.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WINT] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpsu.exe

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Reboot.

==

Post back with a fresh log. :flowers:

Run a scan with HijackThis and check the following object for removal:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WINT] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpsu.exe

Close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Reboot.

How is it running now? :thumbsup:
