I forgot to mention before that it looked like you have to be careful to check PureRa's settings. I had downloaded it but then I lost the download somehow. :( I agree with Allan's comments about PureRa deleting the Windows update install files. If I'm not missing my guess, they affect your ability to delete those updates (Add/remove programs), right Allan?

Anyways, most people find Windows Defragmenter to be obnoxiously slow, hence the proliferation of 3rd party apps. Some like IOBit's Defrag, or AusLogic's (sic) Defrag or Piriform's Defraggler, or one of a number of others. Almost anything is faster than Window's...but not all are safe! Check reviews to avoid bad ones!

Did you try the Seagate utility? Could you please answer my questions about the Seagate drive you are having problems with?

Namaste, Peace & Love,
Glenn

The external harddrive has everything connected securely and is somewhat old(4 years). It has not been dropped.

Have you checked the screenshot of my D: partion?

Edit: Does the download you are referring to need .Net to run?

Have you tried the Seagate tool on it?

The download I meant is PureRa. Sorry.

Yes, I looked at the screenshot. I didn't find it particularly useful, but perhaps someone else will.

Take a look at the possibility that either the connection (USB?) cable or the power cable is damaged. If you can swap out cables, try that. Of course, it could be the brick (power supply), too. If it's a simple cable problem, then you can replace it, but if it's the brick, well...time to buy a new brick.

If you're using a SCSI connection, you need to make sure the SCSI card is still good. I'm 5 hours past my bedtime, so I'm going to stop before I say something wrong. :)

Glenn

I mean to say is that the Seagate tool is not installing/downloading correctly. What else can I try?

Darn, I was hoping it was just me that was having trouble. Listen, I really need to sleep. Please email Seagate and ask them to help you sort out the download problem.

If I come across something else, I'll let you know. In the meantime, try the cables. Hopefully one of the smarter people here will come up with another idea. :)

So, is D: a special partition for recovery/backup?

I'm sorry - I AM too tired. The screen shot shows me that it looks like a normal partition, not for backups or recovery. Sorry, I am so tired I thought it was a screenshot of the Seagate! :(

Anyways, can you just turn on the viewing of hidden files and folders and post another screenshot just so I can make sure that stuff is not hiding?

Pepsi, as RevGAM suggested, we need to see if you have any hidden recovery files/folders in D: before we can make a plan on what to do with that partition.

How to set folder options to view hidden files
Follow these steps:
  • Go to Start > My Computer, or click on the Windows KEY + E.
  • On the menu bar in My Computer, select Tools > Folder Options, or Organize > Folder and search options
  • In Folder Options, select the "View" tab
  • Select the radio button next to "Show hidden files and folders""
  • Un-check the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types"
  • Un-check the box next to "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"
  • Hit "Apply", then "OK"

After doing this take another screenshot, or even better, output the directory structure...

How to output the directory structure
Follow these steps:
  • Click Start.
  • Type in "cmd".
  • You will see cmd.exe show up at the top of your start menu. Right-click on the program and click "Run as Administrator".
  • In the command prompt window, type "tree D: /A > C:\dirstructure.txt".
  • This will create a text document in your C:\ drive root folder. Attach the text file to your next post.

It's not YOUR fault, P&P!

Do you have programs installed to D:? It looks like it from that tree you posted. I didn't notice anything that looked like a backup or recovery folder - did you, kisk?

Note for later (so I don't forget, and so you know):
Please keep in mind that if later you decide to unite C: & D: in one partition, you should first uninstall anything installed to D: in order to avoid any registry programs (such as invalid listings of those programs in add/remove programs, or failed startup items, for example). After you've done that, then you can backup the remaining items or move them to C:.

Did you check the Seagate's cables? If it still spins down with different cables, you might have a power supply issue (the brick for the HDD) or the motor could be at issue, I suppose, but now I'm talking over my head. ;)

Namaste, Peace & Love,
Glenn

I have one thing to put forth here, have you tried to use the Disk Cleanup Wizard that is available via the Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools?

That is a good place to start to clear somethings out.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Mini-toolbox tool will give us a snapshot of your system as it is, and allow us to identify some issues and what not.

In all honesty, I would definitely go and buy a new hard drive. Your current one has limitations and currently since the drive is formated as Fat32 it will have issues with files of 4Gigs or more.

Hey Dan, you know he's on an old Acer laptop, right? Still don't know the model.

Namaste, Peace & Love,
Glenn

If I have frustrated you, then I must be a student. If I've imparted information or a skill to you, then I must be a teacher. If I've helped you, then I must be a volunteer. If I've touched your life, then I must be happy!
If you had to choose between saving just your family, or saving 10,000 GOOD people (but not your family), what would you choose?
