Hello again computer saviours!

Wonder if you can help me with this latest pc problem. For the past couple of weeks, maybe a month, my pc's had a problem where all of a sudden in the middle of whatever you're doing (generally when you're on the internet I think??) the screen suddenly goes black or blue. Sometimes it recovers itself, sometimes it crashes and turns itself off completely. I've also noticed that sometimes it sort of 'hangs' and then comes up with a message saying something along the lines of 'Display driver not working' (I don't even know what a 'driver' is, much less a 'display driver').

I've no idea what this might be related to (as you've probably gathered I'm a complete technophobe) so I've logged it under W7 but do please let me know if it should be logged somewhere else.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Jackie

Hi -
Sorry Jackie, I had a few days off and no one picked up your topic -
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
•Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
•Press "Scan".
•It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
•Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Thank You -

Please visit these M/soft sites -
Check your Direct X version This 30 second video from M/soft may help show you your installed version -

If yours is not the same as in the video, please download the latest version of Direct X from here >>
Direct X for Windows7 64bit and make sure you have the latest version installed -
This is to help with the dxgkrnl.sys error that you are getting -

I also noticed - Stopped: Disk Defragmenter - Go to Start > Type services.msc > Click on Services at the top of the list > At the bottom of services, Click Standard > Look down the list for Disk Defragmanter > Right Click on Startup Type and select Start -

Thank You -

Hello again

Thanks for getting back.

I think I've done everything you've said. I checked the DirectX thing and it is version 11, which I think is right. I also did the Disk Defragmenter. It shows the status as 'Started' and the start-up type as 'Manual'.

Attaching below the read-outs from the mini tool box and the farbar.

Hi -
There are some error problems that will first require a Check Disk scan to be used - Please see the directions in the link below -
Please read and use the following method to run Check Disk Check Disk (chkdsk )

Thank You -
EDIT -
Note that this can/will take over 1 hour on most computers.
From 30 mins if clean and up to 2 hours at worse -

Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK.

Hi Jackie -
It was just in response to one the many above errors from your report asking for a checkdisk scan - You would have another report if it failed

There are several errors and I was going through them one at a time -

Are your problems still about the same, with hanging or black / blue screens ? ?

Thank You -

I assume this is a "laptop" type of computer, and not a "desktop tower" unit - You could never tell me -
If it is a Laptop unit, please turn it over and look for a Maker and Model on the sticker on the back -
If it is a Desktop unit, there usually should be a Brand name on the front

Toshiba® notebooks - Sony® VAIO® notebooks - Panasonic® - Dell® notebooks, are among those that use your Graphics card, but have Special updates -

Thank You -

Yes, still getting the crashing/hanging (eg 'Internet explorer has stopped working') up to a couple of days back.

Fine working thru one step at a time. Prob best for a techno-dunce like me!

Thanks

Jackie

Can you try to answer my last post please ? ?

I do need to have some idea of the Type of computer and Maker / Model if you can -

Thank You -
First-Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, do not scan yet, but can you click on Logs at the top / middle area and post that log back here.
The scans are dated so just click on (highlight) the one you last did, click Open (bottom left) and the log will show up -
Next - Try to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on Windows 7:
  • Click Start, and then click Network. (click Start, type ncpa.cpl into the search box for Windows 7 or Vista, hit ENTER).
  • Click on the Network and Sharing Center
  • Click Manage Network Connections.
  • Right click on the Local Area Connection select Properties.
  • Select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  • Click the Advanced button under the General tab.
  • Click the WINS tab.
  • Click Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP.
  • Click OK and Exit the settings.
Always ask if you have any problems -

After you finish the above.
I would ask you to contact your Internet Service Provider and mention that you are having problems staying connected to the internet
Usually a Free call, but if they do not have a Call-back service, you may need to have a coffee with you and a comfy seat -

See if they can check your Modem settings, and ask if they have been having any problems with their network recently.
They should walk you through resetting the modem (very simple) and then see if the problems still continue.

Program: Internet Explorer
File: The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
User Action
1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
2.If the file still cannot be accessed and it is on the network,
your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.

Thanks -

Hi again

Only just seen your messages re laptop etc.

No it's not a laptop. It's a desktop. It was built by a UK company called Palicomp 2 or 3 years ago. On the monitor it says 'AOC'. On the tower casing it has 'G-Lite' or 'E-Lite' and 'Cooler Master'. From the invoice it says: CPU: Intel Core i3 540; Motherboard: ASRock H55M USB3; RAM: 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz; HDD: 500GB SATA2; Optical: 22X DVD+/-RW Lightscribe; Video1: ATI 5450 512MB; Internal Card Reader.

Does any of that help?

I'll address the rest a bit later today.

Thx

Jackie

Hi again

I did the things in your numbered list.

Slightly confused on point 5. You said "5.Select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)". It was already ticked (checked) along with everything else in that list. I just left it that way. Ie, I didn't untick the other things in the list leaving just that ticked, I just left everything INCLUDING that ticked. Was that the right thing to do?

I'll call my ISP and see how I get on......

Is there anything else you need me to do?

Thanks

Jackie

Slightly confused on point 5.

This is no problem. I am only reading the errors that are listed, and replying to those that have solutions available -
Without the computer here, I must give these answers to the shown errors -

Next -
As I thought - Your version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is many, many months out of date (Database version: 6558). This is about 5 or 6 months old -
Since there has been a changed / new version for a long time now, follow these procedures as outlined.
First - Delete your version from Programs and Features - Now download and run this utility. mbam-clean.exe
It will ask to restart your computer, Please allow it to).
After the computer restarts, Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE
You should click the Update Tab at least once every week, as the program is actually updated about 3 times every day -

Please let us know what your ISP says, and if they reset the modem -

Thank you -
