I just recently downloaded avast! and ran a scan on my computer to find something like 2500 virus contained within a folder. avast! claimed that it was a rootkit virus. It was contained within the folder 488053cdbca3231eeb2c2af7236d09ed within C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. I have tried opening it, but it gives me an O/I error and when I try to delete the folder it also gives me an error message.

You need to run AVAST's scan in order to run a scan that will give you the option to get rid of rootkit viruses. Click on it. Your computer will restart and run an AVAST boot-time scan, which should solve your problem.
