Hi, I have a wired network that is giving me grief. To keep this simple ill only include the wired network, which consists of 1xwindows7 (pc1) and 2xwindows xpsp3 (pc 2 and pc 3) pc1 and 2 are in the same room, and pc3 is approx 12 metres (cable length) away. All 3 pcs are hard wired to my Asus rt-n16 router, which has wireless disabled. Pc 3 has been professionally connected via cat6 cable and termination boxes, and cat5e patch cables at each end. Im having problems trying to sync from pc 1 to pc 3, some software will work, some wont, and Im commonly getting the dreaded "specified network path is no longer available" error in more than 1 software. Strange thing is if I sync from pc1 to pc2, then pc2 will sync to pc3 without ever a problem. I have tried running a tempory cat 5e cable from my router to pc 3 with no difference. I also have a gigabit switch, which does not have any pcs connected to it, as they all go direct from my router. I have a nas and 3 printers hooked into the switch. I used teracopy recently to copy about 80GB files from pc1 to pc3 without problems. All other network functions, copying, deleting, viewing work perfectly, as does internet access. I have built all 3 pcs myself and all have gigabyte mainboards with onboard lan, and all 3 pcs have the latest lan drivers. I did try installing a gigabit lan card in pc3 with the same problem. Every pc and the router is all gigabit, as is the switch. I use a secondary router Asus rt-n12 as an access point for whenever wireless network is required, which is the only time it is switched on, and it is connected to my switch. Sorry to be long winded, and thanks for reading

PS: any pc can ping any other network device, and software that wont sync from pc 1 to pc 3 will sync from pc 3 to pc 1 ??? I would like to upload the results of mini toolbox, but I may be stupid because I cant find a way to, or do you have to send a link to another site to do so?

For the mini toolbox report just open the log in notepad, Word, etc. The copy and past its content into a reply and post it to the thread. However since you can PING each computer then the network is not likely the suspect unless you have enabled port forwarding. What version of Windows XP are you using on both computers, Xp Home Edition, or Xp Pro?

Both xp pcs are home edition with sp3, the win 7 has no service packs. I already have the minitoolbox results for pc1 and pc3 (the problem pcs) as follows. BTW ive fixed the reference to the parallel port error on the xp pc. (disabled the driver)

I notice there is an error on the win7 pc referring to volume copy shadow service, which I think is used by some sync software as ive seen it mentioned in documentation somewhere? I did a google on vcss and came across a couple of references to Acronis. Yes I have acronis true image installed. ????

Please follow these instructions from Microsoft to set Windows XP to allow Anonymous User's access to File sharing. This will allow Windows 7 to access the Windows XP machine
In Microsoft Windows XP and in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the Everyone group does not contain the security identifier (SID) "Anonymous." Therefore, users or services that attempt to access an object anonymously are not granted access if the access control list (ACL) on the object includes the Everyone group. Anonymous access is only granted for objects whose ACL explicitly contains the anonymous SID

To set the EveryoneIncludesAnonymous registry value by using local security settings:
  • Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click either Local Security Policy or Domain Security Policy (on domain controllers only).
  • Click Security Settings, double-click Local Policies, and then click Security Options.
  • Right-click Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users, and then click Properties.
  • To enable anonymous users to be members of the Everyone security group, click Enabled. To prevent the inclusion of the Everyone security group SID in the anonymous user's access token (the Windows XP default), click Disabled.
Let me know if this solves the issue

I did find in your credit link, the way to edit the registry though. Both xp pcs had the flag set to 0, and i changed the pc i cant sync to to 1. No good unfortunately (yes i rebooted) thanks

Yes all network functions except for sync works well, I can view, cut, copy, paste, delete, print, access my nas, from any pc, to any other pc on the network.

synctoy does not work
free file sync does not work, it used to, and it is a program i like
sync back does not work
There are several others that I got rid of that dont work

Viceversa works
path sync works
synchredible works
dirsyncpro works

The programs that dont work across the network will work on local folders
