Hello,

My neighbor received an IBM X40 laptop running Windows XP Professional from a friend. My neighbor is elderly and not very computer literate. After looking over the computer, I assisted him with getting internet access in his home. He has AT&T U-verse DSL service. Everything seemed to work well.

A couple of days later, my neighbor noticed that his internet stops working after a few minutes. After he told me about it, I checked his laptop.

Sure enough, the internet will work well for about 5-15 minutes (sometimes even longer). However, it will eventually stop working. Once you restart the computer, the internet will work for a certain period of time (like 5-15 minutes) and then stop working.

I ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware and it was clean.
I ran his virus scan and it didn't find anything.
I tried the ipconfig /release and /renew. Nada.
I tried typing the "netsh winsock reset catalog" and "netsh int ip reset reset.log." It still has the problem.

I also updated the wireless drivers (I think). One was fine and the other drivers updated. I restarted the computer...and the problem persisted. However, I would like to know WHICH specific drivers that I should update.

One peculiar issue was the fact that his computer would download updates nearly every time that he turned the computer on. Yet, they seldom seemed to install them. I suspect that it could be tied to the internet failing to work after a few minutes, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

This elderly neighbor only needs the computer for occasional internet surfing and to pay a few bills. Yet, this problem is annoying. You can't watch a YouTube video without the wireless internet failing after some time.

I haven't checked if he has the problem with an ethernet cable. However, he isn't home right now (and I have his laptop at my home).

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks,
-Chris

Has everything been updated driver wise, and what materials are near by? Also do they wear a pace maker?

I don't know exactly WHICH drivers to update. Which ones do you recommend to update? How do I get to them?

No, he doesn't wear a pacemaker either.

You will need to find out what kind of wireless adapter he is using, and update it via going to the manufacturers site.

How would I do that? Should I download something like Belarc Advisor and figure out which wifi adapter is on the laptop and then manually download it? Or, is there some other way to do this?

Do you think that this is the reason that the internet always stops working after a length of time?

Thanks.
