Hello,

Currently trying to fix an issue with my mother-in-law's computer. After scouring the Internet for alternative help with the problem, I have found that it is time to just post here. So here it is:

The computer was having issues with pop-ups and slow internet. As is habit, I downloaded malwarebytes onto the infected machine, and ran a quick scan. The computer found five problems. When it came time to remove the issues, it had 4 of them automatically checked and selected for removal, and one unchecked. I checked the unchecked box, and pressed remove all. It then of course prompted me to restart the computer, which I did. After this, I left the room. When I returned, I turned on the computer, it posted, and then all that came on was a blinking cursor over a dark screen. The cursor and keyboard are non-responsive.

I'm sorry, but I do not know the name of the viruses I removed. I did save a log onto the desktop, but didn't think to save it externally because I didn't expect Windows to not even be able to boot.

To whoever responds to this issue: what would be the best time of day to be working on this issue with you, that way I can mostly catch you when you are online, and hopefully resolve the issue faster! Thank you.

-Jim

Hi,

Please run the following:

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh by noahdfear to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe by noahdfear to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Once this process is completed, download Dumpit by noahdfear to the USB drive.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Close the Open Terminal.
  • Confirm that you see the file dumpit in your USB drive and double click on it.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in your USB drive named mbr.zip
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.zip file must be attached to your reply.

well, there is nothing obvious there that would cause this computer not to boot so let's find a restore point.

please do the following:

we need to use xPud again
  • please download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/rst.sh to the USB drive
  • Insert the USB drive and CD in the unbootable computer
  • Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see rst.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located at sdb1 named enum.log
  • Plug that USB back into the clean computer and open it
Please note: If you have an ethernet connection you can access the internet by way of xPUD (Firefox). You can perform all these steps on your unbootable computer. When you download the download will reside in the Download folder. It can be found under the File tab also. You can similarly access our thread by way of this OS too so you can send the logs that way.

Please also note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the enum.log for my review

It's still not booting into windows. Here are the logs for the reports you had me run:

Model: ATA SAMSUNG SP1604N (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 160GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
2 32.3kB 160GB 160GB primary ntfs

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SOFTWARE hive restored from RP350
SYSTEM hive restored from RP350
SECURITY hive restored from RP350
SAM hive restored from RP350

Hope this helps.

(Looks like a saw a chached version of this page, so I did do the second "350" step. Hope that isn't a problem!)

OK, there are tons of restore points available.

Let's try an earlier restore point, do you recall the date this issue occurred?

  • Boot the unbootable computer into xPUD again
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh -r
  • Type 345
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located at sdb1 named restore.log
  • Please try to boot into normal Windows now and indicate if you were successful

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the restore.log from your USB drive for my review

Issue happened on April 25th.

I tried the 345 restore point, but it still will not work. However, I do not have access to the restore.log atm. Will get it to you asap.
