Hi! I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post in given I am working in Windows XP Media Center Ed, but Windows XP Home and Professional appeared to be the closest match to those listed.

I'm posting because whenever I attempt to open a folder within Word, I encounter delays of up to several minutes. However, if I access Word through another program, such as through Adobe or You Send It (a file sharing program), I can easily open any folder within Word without a delay.

Once a folder has eventually opened (after several minutes), I can then open any Word document within that folder without encountering a delay, but should I try to open a folder within a folder, I encounter the same issue of a delay of several minutes to open the next folder. Obviously, I can't get any work done.

I'm trying avoid buying a new computer if I can. Below are my specs. I've run CCleaner, Windows Doctor(trial version) and Malwarebytes. I have not defragmented because Leo LePorte (The Tech Guy) recommends against defragmenting, saying it causes more issues.

My operating system is Windows XP Media Center Ed Version 2002 SP3. I'm using Microsoft Office 2003. My computer is a Dell XPS with 1 GB of Ram and 72.5 GB of free space remaining. I do have Norton 360 Premium v6 running on it.

I do not encounter any delays when I print a document in Word, nor do I encounter any delays when brousing the internet. Only when opening folders within Word.

Any suggestions as to what to try next would be very much appreciated! If I can't resolve this shortly, I'm going to be forced to buy a new computer because it is impractical to go on this way. I just can't believe there isn't a fix for this besides a new computer. Thank you!!!

Open MSconfig disable everything except your antivirus. If you connect wirelessly then do not disable anything that reads wireless.REoot.You do not need anything other than your AV starting with your machine.

http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/index.html

Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there, after hiding microsoft services? Please post back to us in a vertical list.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
unzip Autoruns to your desktop run it.See any entries that read file not found when you see them right click and select delete do this only for the entries that read file not found also uncheck any scheduled task that are set to run on your machine, close the program.

After completing the above task then Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
double click on TFC.exe to run it.If TFC doesnt prompt a reboot then please do so manually

Hit start at the lower left hand corner type cmd in the run box and copy and paste the following info chkdsk /r Hit enter it will ask to schedule a check disk on the next reboot hit y type exit then reboot your machine it will take a good while to finish let it be this is normal.

Please download MINITOOLBOX and run it.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe

Checkmark following boxes:

Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

Then defrag your machine. http://www.vcsoftwares.com/SpeeDefrag.html

Hi InadequateInfirmity! I finished the first step you instructed pertaining to msconfig. You wrote "after hiding microsoft services? Please post back to us in a vertical list." I'm not that computer savvy and I'm not sure what you were referring to by "in a vertical list" (did you mean continuing this thread?)or if there was something specific you were waiting for me to post on after having taken your first suggested step? I'm on to step 2 now pertaining to unzipping Autoruns to my desktop to run.

There will be a list of items that you can copy and paste, almost like the list below
Your items will not be at all like this list, but this is just an example to show you the finished look - (this is from another scan)

AVS Image Converter 2.0.2.160
AVS Update Manager 1.0
AVS4YOU Software Navigator 1.4
BESTDirect 8 (Version: 1.0.482)
BPD_HPSU (Version: 1.00.0000)
bpd_scan (Version: 3.00.0000)
BPDSoftware (Version: 50.0.165.000)
BPDSoftware_Ini (Version: 1.00.0000)

I think you can get the idea from this - Is that OK - And yes, please continue by adding your list below here -

Thank You -

I went into MSconfig, disabled unneeded items, rebooted, then went back into MSconfig, opened the services tab and put a check mark in the "hide all microsoft services" box, at which point I believe the computer then had to restart. I see the list noknojon posted as just an example, but after I took the above steps, no list came up to copy and post. Was there suppose to be?

I want to mention too....just after I posted above that I had finished the MSConfig step, I retried to open my folders within Word just for fun to see if having followed step 1 had made any difference yet. Surprisingly, I found I could fly around opening various folders without any delay at all, something I absolutely could not do before. However, when I clicked on the down arrow to the right of the Look In: dialog box in order to go back to a prior folder, suddenly the arrow disappeared, as did the name of the folder I was currently in, for about 5 minutes before reappearing. From that point on, any folder I would click on would again take about 5 minutes to open, regardless of the location of the folders on Word. I exited out of Word and tried again and same thing. So now, upon starting Word, I can fly forward opening folders with absolutely no delay, but the minute I click on the down arrow to the right of the Look In: dialog box, it's back to the 5 minute wait to open any subsequent folder. Any idea why this would be?

I've finished step two pertaining to Autoruns. 2 questions about this step though to ensure I've done it correctly. When I clicked to download, it downloaded both Autoruns and Autorunsc. I only ran the Autoruns per inadequateInfirmity's instructions. Should I have run both or was running just Autoruns sufficient? Secondly, when I ran Autoruns, the items that appeared reflecting "file not found" were highlighted in pink. There were, however, 3 additional items, as follows, that were also highlighted in pink, but did NOT state "file not found," so I left them in place. These were the 3 files:

vidc.iv31 c:\windows\system32\ir32_32.dll
vidc.iv32 c:\windows\system32\ir32_32.dll
wmplug c:\windows\wt\webdriver\4.1.1\wtwmplug.ax

Because none these 3 reflected "file not found," was I correct in NOT deleting them?

Thanks so much for helping guide me through this process!

This is a quick picture of my msc items (still ticked) as per following the directions -

Any items in Autoruns that still have files listed you do not touch yet -

Thanks

I'm now at the part where I am to download Minitoolbox and run it and add check marks to various boxes. One of the boxes listed above that I am suppose to check is listed as "List last 10 Event viewer log" but there is no such option to check. The option that comes closest is "List last 10 Event Viewer Errors." Was "log" a typo and I am meant to check "List last 10 Event Viewer Errors"?

Yes to the above. And as far as the list from your services you will need to manually type them out because there is no way to copy and past them,Or provide a screen shot. You can get a screen capture sofyware here.

It's now after 2:00 a.m. where I am so I'm off to bed and will check this forum in the morning to pick up where I left off.

As mentioned above, I'm now at the stage of checking off boxes in Minitoolbox (just need a clarification on whether I'm suppose to be checking off "List last 10 Event viewer errors" rather than "log" because there is no such "log" option to check).

Given I have now gone through several of the above suggested steps, I tried clicking again on my folders within Word and still find that although I am now able to open Word and then open various folders moving forward in my tree of folders with any delay, as soon as I click on the downward arrow located across from Look In: in the dialog box, the downward pointing arrow disappears as does whichever folder was displayed next to the down arrow and it then takes several minutes for the arrow to reappear, along with the tree of folders from which I can now choose from. But from that point on, it then takes about 5 minutes for each subsequent folder to open. What I did discover though, is if I then click on the My Computer icon located on the left hand side of the dialog box (directly below Look In:), it will instantly return me to Local Disk C: from which I can then open and then, again, freely click on my folders moving forward through my tree of folders without any delay (that is until I should click on the downward arrow again...) At least this is a way in which I can continue to open folders within Word without a delay, but I shouldn't have to do this. When I click on the downward pointing arrow across from the Look In: box, it shouldn't disappear for 5 minutes and then cause subsequent attempts to open additional folder to take 5 minutes per folder. That's just ridiculous. So any ideas why this is occurring? AND once I check off the items in Minitoolbox and then defrag (the last two steps listed), is it expected this issue is going to resolve?

Thanks so much!

Okay. Just ran Minitoolbox and below are the results I was asked to post. I deleted my full last name. Do the below results help at all to solve this mystery?
