Lost Internet Connection after removing S.M.A.R.T. HDD Fake.

Hi InadequateInfirmity ,

I've been struggling with the same problem for a few days now - also after removing the S.M.A.R.T HDD Fake Virus.

I've tried the Winsock Fix program unsuccessfully. I also tried the manual methods described by several others to restore the Winsock keys in the Registry - again without success.

Finally I came across this thread and was glad to see someone succeeeding in solving this problem. I thought I might go directly to the very last step that solved the problem here. But found that the file netbt.sys does exist in my system - on both hard drives!

So, what do you suggest?

Your help would be very much appreciated!

Hi -
Sorry but he has not shown up yet (I did send a message but he may be out or working). Can you start with this >>
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Thanks -

Hi -
Can you check in Device Manager for items with ( ! or ? ) beside them - I think you will find 2 items -

Next: From the Run Box, type the following, pressing Enter after each line :

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset

If you still have connection problems download -
winsockXP

If you still have the same problems post back and we will add more items -

Thanks -

Thank you for the guidance.

- There are No items in Device Manager with (! or ?) beside them

- Performed these 4 steps in the RUN Box:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset

Finally, ran Winsock Fix

But still No Connection!

Please advise of the next step. Appreciate your help.

This infection has made a mess of many computers recently, and at times it takes days to repair the mess -

Are you trying for Wireless or Direct Wired (Ethernet) connection, if wireless is there a signal from the modem ??

Next ; For the connection try this...
Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.......

If there are still problems
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic336194.html
Now can you try to follow the directions in the thread above, starting at Post #5

Next -
•Open notepad and copy and paste the all the text inside the following code box into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\Ipsec]
"Tag"=dword:4
•Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".

•Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, click Yes to merge it with the registry.
Please reboot the computer and let me know if you can connect to the internet now.

Next: Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
•Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
•Press "Scan".
•It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
•Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Thanks for the continuing help. To make sure that everything is clear, this is a wired Ethernet connection that I'm having the problem with. The DSL modem is working properly, because if I connect another computer to it, Internet connection is fine.

As per your instructions, I've performed the following without success - yet:

- First, followed the instructions in the other link that you provided.

- Then tried the Registry Fix.

- Finally, The FSS. Here's the log:

The ipsec file is corrupt here is a site that you can get theipsec file from you will need to of course need to download the xp file then unzip the file inside of a new folder inside the new folder look for the ipsec file then right click and select merge. http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/

Also o the same for the LEGACY wscsvc file. Edit: Alsodo this for the wscsvc file. not just the legacy.

Then please do the following.

Please download the windows all in one repair tool.
http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=7141&file=15&evp=18a37c9c3804bd022748a38eb328614e

Trying to perform the first procedure, after downloading the XP file, I was able to successfully merge the ipsec file, but not the Legacy-wscsvc file. The error message said something like :"Cannot import - Error accessing the Registry"

Should I still proceed with the next step of the All-in-one repair tool?

Thank you for your continued help!

Please try the standard wscsvc file. the one that reads wscsvc file. not the Legacy then move on to the windows repair tool.If you have problems with that then just move on to the repiar tool. :)

Both the ipsec file and wscsvc file did not help.

The All-in-one Windows repair tool:

- In Step2,"Check Disk" could not be performed?! (No reason given)

- During the following phases, the following Error Message kept popping up frequently:

"Execute Process Remotely" has encountered a problem and needs to close. !

Then, after finishing and restarting, a blue screen appears at the beginning and tries to Check Disk

It tries to:

1) Verify Files (phase 1)

2) Verify Indexes (phase 2)

3) Verify Security Descriptors (phase 3)

At this last phase, it starts to do the following in a very fast and hyper way: "Inserting an Index Entry with id XXXX into index $SDH/SII of file 9.

The id # started from 1 and rose very quickly to several thousand. So I had to stop it!

Now, every time the computer starts, it tries to perform the same Disk Cheking and verification procedures.

On the other hand, I came across this site, that I'm sure you're familiar with:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811259

I copied and pasted the following section, that I thought might apply to this problem.

But there's a problem. Performing this manual procedure requires having an XP Disk, but I don't have one. When I bought this computer from Micro Center here in Dallas, it came with Windows XP installed, but with a Vista Disk (for upgrading) - No XP disk!

I didn't think much of it at the time, but now I see how important it is. I contacted Micro Center, but they could not provide me with an XP disk.

Now, the question is:

First, do you think this is an important procedure that might solve the problem?

Second, is there a way that I could get an XP disk or its files downloaded so I can perform this procedure?

Your valuable help is very much appreciated!

P.S.: Which type of disk is meant here - is it the full operating system, or the Repair an Recovery disk? And is it the same as a Booting disk?

Please forgive my ignorance.

Here's this section from the site:

Manual steps to recover from Winsock2 corruption

Windows XP with Service Pack 2 instructions
To repair Winsock if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note Restart the computer after you run this command. Additionally, for computers that are running Windows XP SP2, there is a new netsh command that can rebuild the Winsock key. For more information, visit the following Web site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457156.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457156.aspx) Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet such as antivirus, firewall, or proxy clients may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality.

Note If these steps do not resolve the problem, follow the steps in the next section.
Windows XP without Service Pack 2 instructions
To repair Winsock if you do not have Windows XP SP2 installed, delete the corrupted registry keys, and then reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.
Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

For more information about how to back up the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Vista
  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  • In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

  • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.
Step 2: Install TCP/IP
  • Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
  • Click Install.
  • Click Protocol, and then click Add.
  • Click Have Disk.
  • Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
  • On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.

If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) does not appear, follow these steps:
  • Click Start, and then click Search.
  • In the Search Companion pane, click More advanced options.
  • Click to select the following three check boxes:
  • Search system folders
  • Search hidden files and folders
  • Search subfolders
[/list]In the All or part of the file name box, type nettcpip.inf, and then click Search.<li>In the results pane, right-click Nettcpip.inf, and then click Install.Restart the computer.
