computer only works in safe mode--pls. help

I am in need of any help/advice as to why my daughter's computer freezes and will only continously work in safe mode. this is a compaq running xp. she has been without the use of this computer since dec and finally ask for my help. do you need a hjt log? to assist me. ps. ps I am a 65 year old that has some small knowledge, where you lead me i will follow(smile)

I have a copyright on that line :), but I'm willing to extend use to all :).

As a start, let's see if we can get some data re the system. See if you can follow the directions and

Any onscreen error messages (exact wording, please) when attempting to boot normally?

Does the system actually boot into Windows in normal mode...and then alperform?
