I was posting over in "am I infected" and I was told to follow the prep. guide and post results here. About 2 months ago I noticed spam emails being sent out from my account to people in my address book and as well as people who are not in my address book. With the help of bleeping computer we have run multiple scans, etc. to no avail. I will post results of the DDS scan below. I tried running the GMER multiple times but 10 minutes into it it always restarted the computer.

Gmer not running is often a clue to what's going on so let's start with a rootkit remover and then scan the system for anything rootkit-like left over

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

Then

Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

I had a quick question. Prior to this happening I was actually going to buy a new computer. This one is old and slow. Does that make a difference? Meaning if there is an infection could it be related to the router, etc. I didn't know if I purchased a new one the problem might go away. Thanks for all your help.

I was unable to run TDSSKiller via the start>run. It kept saying that it could not find the directory. I extracted the contents to the desktop via the instructions but I kept getting that same message. I ran a scan by clicking on the program and no malicous objects were found. Below is the log of the other scan.

I had a quick question. Prior to this happening I was actually going to buy a new computer. This one is old and slow. Does that make a difference? Meaning if there is an infection could it be related to the router, etc. I didn't know if I purchased a new one the problem might go away.

My job is to make sure that the problems are not malware-related. If you are clean then the age of the machine is something to take into account so you should get some diagnostics done on the XP forum. XP is an older operating system but the slowness isn't always something caused by the PC or the operating system. It is also important to remember that you have or have had an infection which caused a spam storm so we may find some processes which are dragging down your speed.

I would like to see a good strong removal tool on the system now. MBAM is the choice here

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If MBAM won't update then download and update MBAM on a clean computer then save the rules.ref folder to a memory stick. This file is found here: 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' then transfer it across to the infected computer.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Hi,

I have not had a reply from you for 6 days. Can you please tell me if you still need help with your computer as I am unable to help other members with their problems while I have your topic still open. The time taken between posts can also change the situation with your PC making it more difficult to help you.

If you like you can PM me.

Thanks,

m0le
