For the past few weeks or so, my computer has been very slow. It’s gotten to a quite agitating point. At first, I thought that maybe it was just because the computer is a couple of years old, so I did a few things to speed it up – I disabled some of the startup programs, uninstalled some unused programs, cleaned out a lot of unnecessary files, uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. I also ran CCleaner (the regular cleaner and the registry cleaner). I also tried to run Super Anti-Spyware, Adaware, Avast, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (one at a time, of course).

However, I haven’t been able to successfully run Super Anti-Spyware Remover or Adaware for the past few weeks. Super Anti Spyware always encounters an unexpected problem and must shut down unexpectedly. Adaware did the same thing. I uninstalled and reinstalled both of them, just in case it was a problem with the programs. Super Anti-Spyware still does the exact same thing. When I reinstalled Adaware, it was the newer version, but it still won’t complete a (full) scan. This time, it just froze at a certain point. It was stuck on one file and the timer telling you how long it’s been scanning was stuck at the same time. A little while later, it crashed.

I can get Malwarebytes to complete a scan, though it finds nothing. I can also get Adaware to complete a quick scan, and it also finds nothing.

I’ve also noticed that Avast has also been telling me “Malicious software has been blocked” more frequently than I’m used to. Often times, it’s when I’m on familiar/safe sites or not even surfing the internet. Yesterday, it crashed during one such instance after having blocked a few in a row.

The behavior of my anti-virus/anti-spyware programs makes me wonder if I’m not infected with something. If I’m not, the slow computer problem still remains and I’d appreciate someone helping me there. At this point, any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I tried to click on the link to download Security check, but I was redirected to a page that said:

"Visiting this site may harm your computer!

To keep you safe, this page was blocked by Ad-Aware 10 "Shop & Bank safely online" feature. To view this page please disable this functionality in your Ad-Aware 10 interface then try again."

I tried to close Ad-Aware and click the link again, but Firefox froze. I closed Firefox and tried to reopen it, but then the entire computer froze and had to be restarted. When I restarted it I exited Ad-Aware and clicked on the link again, but am still redirected to the same Ad-Aware warning page.

I think my computer is running even slower now than it was before. Should I still try to click the link and download it?

Also, the computer seems to have recovered from the previously mentioned extra-slow state (after FF and the computer itself froze and needed to be restarted) and is back to the regular-slow state it was in when I first posted.

I tried to run aswMBR.exe and my computer crashed. When it started back up I tried to run it again. The scan was taking longer, so I assumed it was fine and left it running when I went to go take a shower. When I came back, the computer had restarted, so I assume it crashed again. There is no MBR.dat file on my desktop.

Here is the log from the Security Check:

Download Bootkit Remover to your desktop.

  • Unzip downloaded file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on boot_cleaner.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users, right click on boot_cleaner.exe and click Run As Administrator).
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
  • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  • Press CTRL+C
  • Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
  • Post the output back here.

=======================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

When I tried to run chkdsk by typing "chkdsk /f /r [i]" into the command prompt and it said, "Access Denied as you do not have sufficient priviliges. You have to evoke this utility running in an elevated mode." I haven't tried restarting yet because that message made it sound like it wouldn't work.

When I ran the bootkit remover, I got a popup that said, "WARNING. ATA_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT is not supported by your disk controller. SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT will be use for disk I/O"

I couldn't copy what it said because I forgot to right click and then click Select All - out of habit I pushed Ctrl+A and it closed the window. Sorry! =/ Should I run it again?

OK, one thing at a time.
First, follow instructions from my previous post to run "chkdsk".
Let me know if anything has been found.

Then re-run Bootkit Remover.

When I went to run chkdsk, this is what happened:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright © 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /f /r [i]
The drive, the path, or the file name is not valid.

My fault.
Correct command is:
chkdsk /f /r
"[i]" was some formatting leftover
