Hi, I'm having difficulties with my desktop in that I'm getting abnormal amounts of bandwidth usage (my internet has a bandwidth cap). Even when barely using the internet, I can get 1gb of bandwidth usage in an hour. I've downloaded NetWorx to track my bandwidth usage and noticed that my bandwidth can stay at a constant low rate and then suddenly spike up to like 25 mb/s for a couple of seconds. This seems to happen sometimes when I open FireFox or Skype, but not always so I'm not sure if its coincidence or not. I've ran Symantec Endpoint Antivirus, Malwarebytes, and Spybot S/D scans (I've ran them in normal mode as well as safe mode). These scans weren't able to pick up any problems at all. I've included a HiJackThis log and it would be great if someone could help sort out this problem. Thanks!

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

HijackThis is not able to provide accurate information for 64 bit systems.
In your case we need to see a DDS Log.
I would remove HijackThis using the Add/Remove Programs list.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post.
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be an open door for an infection

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please post the logs for my review.

Security issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/?sort=PN&alpha=WINDOWS+vista
Support for Windows Vista without any service packs has ended on April 13, 2010.
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 support ended on 12/07/2011

For continued security support from Microsoft get the Service Pack 2.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791

As indicated on the Microsoft page SP1 must be installed before proceeding to install SP2.
You will find the necessary link on the page.

My Windows OS is actually already SP2, I just haven't updated it since July 2011. I'll update it after my bandwidth problem is fixed. When I ran ComboFix, it was preparing the log report when my Windows desktop disappeared(which I understand is normal) but afterwards it also restarted my computer. After my computer restarted, ComboFix continued to finish preparing the log report and then finally closed presenting me with the log text file. I was just wondering if it is normal for ComboFix to restart my computer in the middle of preparing the log report. I have included the ComboFix log report below, thanks!

I was just wondering if it is normal for ComboFix to restart my computer in the middle of preparing the log report.

Sometimes yes.

The ComboFix log is clean.

Is the problem still around?

I'll test it out. What's considered a normal "spike" in bandwidth if I'm browsing through Firefox or logging onto Skype?

I think it's still happening, when I logged onto Skype my bandwidth rocketed to 7.7mb/s for a second or two (a total of 15 to 16 mb). And browsing Firefox, I was getting about 400kb/s whenever I changed pages (just like Yahoo or Facebook). It still seems rather high so I'm not sure what the problem is.

-edit-
I just tried logging onto Skype on my laptop and my bandwidth only went up to about 175 kb/s. Browsing using FireFox also only gave me about 30 kb/s traffic. Both my desktop and my laptop seem to have bandwidth "spikes" at the same moments, such as logging onto Skype or changing web pages which is normal, but my desktop always seems to have much much higher spikes. Could it have something to do with my Wireless N USB Adapter that I'm using to get internet on my desktop (http://www.amazon.com/Medialink-Wireless-Adapter-802-11n-Compatible/dp/B002RM08RE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334775410&sr=8-2)? I never seemed to have bandwidth problems until this month though and I've been using the same USB adapter for about 3 months.

Yes.

Connect this computer by passing the USB wireless adapter.
If all is well it will mean that the USB is infected.

I don't believe the USB is the problem. I tried the wireless adapter on my laptop and it worked fine with no bandwidth problems. I even reinstalled the wireless adapter driver and tried a different USB port on my desktop but I continued to have the same USB problems. I would try to connect my desktop directly using an ethernet cable to further test if the USB is the problem but unfortunately my college dorm doesn't have an ethernet jack. I'm thinking of reinstalling JAVA on my desktop, I'm not sure if it is the problem or not but when I ran a scan through Symantec at the very beginning, it did find one small trojan which it deleted that I think had some relation to JAVA. When I searched up the trojan online, it was listed as a very minor risk so I didn't mention it. I really don't know what the problem is, my desktop runs perfectly except for the bandwidth problem which prevents me from going online.

You have the latest version of Java™ 6 Update 31.

You may want to Clean the Java Cache. Tutorial.

Is the USB damaged or infected?
You may want to start a new topic in this Hardware forum.

Not sure if these experts have some way to test it.
Do this after you have tried everything.

You may want to try this tool.

p.s. It it's infected it may infect any other computer that you will mount it.

Can you find out from the Manufacturer is it's possible to infect this USB.

I asked the manufacturers and they claimed that its not possible. My laptop also seems to be running fine, no abnormal bandwidth, so I don't think the problem is with the USB. Would cleaning the Java Cache help at all? Are there any other scans you think I should run? I tried to update my Windows on my desktop, but for some reason it was having trouble updating. It was stuck at 0% downloading files even though my bandwidth meter was reading huge download bandwidth. Thanks for all the help!

Please let me see this log before you run the other scanner.

Please Download
TDSSKiller.zip

>>> Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application.
  • Click on the Start Scan button and wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue
    Posted Image
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue
    Posted Image
  • If you are asked to reboot the computer to complete the process, click on the Reboot Now button. A report will be automatically saved at the root of the System drive ((usually C:\) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt" (for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file will appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
