Windows firewall and MS Security Essentials were up & running. Wife was on computer, searching, when suddenly "S.M.A.R.T HDD" took over. It faked scanning & reporting bad HDD sector errors, etc., and by the time I could shut it down, the payload had been delivered. All Programs > Empty, Quickstart toolbar enabled but empty. IE, FireFox redirect search results in Google and Bing. PC began running much slower than normal.

Troubleshooting so far:

Round 1: scanned and cleaned 1 item with MS Security Essentials. Installed MalwareBytes and cleaned 6 more. Installed Spybot and cleared 40 others. Result: speed improved, MalwareBytes began blocking outgoing IP address accesses it knew to be malicious.

Round 2: went looking for answers on the hidden program links, found suggestions on MajorGeeks.com. Attempted to run TDSSKILLER.EXE but despite renaming and running from flash drive, the file would not execute. Downloaded and ran RogueKiller, but I was unsure of the interface and output file.

Round 3: called my PC-guru brother-in-law (I am more of a server/hardware guy). :-) He suggested ComboFix, then SuperAntiSpyware and other steps. I booted to Safe Mode with Networking Support, ran ComboFix, and it successfully installed Windows Recovery Console. However, even though I was very careful not to touch the window at all for more than 2 hours, Scan for Infected Files locked up. There was no hard drive activity at all, as far as I could tell, and no response to keyboard or mouse. Powered off.

Round 4: Booted to Windows normally, uninstalled MalwareBytes and turned off Spybot & Security Essentials so they would not interfere with ComboFix. This time ComboFix went more quickly to the Scan, but still stopped after a few minutes. I let it run for 7 hours overnight, and it was still locked up this morning. No HDD activity light or sound, no response to keyboard or mouse. Powered off.

Round 5: registered at BleepingComputer.com and, well, here I am.

I hope an expert can spare the time to help me out of this mess before I make it any worse. Thank you.

Edit: IE Favorites are gone. IE closes randomly. New pop-up IE sessions randomly to various junk sites.

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Security Check

  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

  • .logs from DDS
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

Thank you, gringo. Yes, I just need more time. The PC wasn't the only 'appliance' to break down over the weekend. :)

Update: I did get one minor issue resolved. Selected properties of Program Files and unchecked Hidden, allowed that to propagate to subfolders and files. Did the same for each user's My Documents. After that, All Programs, recently used programs, recent documents, Quickstart toolbar and more reappeared as normal. Programs launch fine, files are as they should be. I forgot to look at Favorites, but I suspect it is similarly back in service.

I may not have time tonight to follow your instructions, it may be Wednesday night. Thank you for your patience and kind assistance.

Disabled antivirus programs and script blockers, then ran DDS.scr per instructions. The CMD-shell read that DDS would run about 3 minutes. After 20 minutes of seeing no further progress, I checked and everything had locked up. There was no response to keyboard or mouse. I let it run another 20 minutes, for a total of 40 minutes, before checking again. It seemed my only choice was powering off the PC. Did that, then booted up, repeated above except that I let DDS.scr run for 30 minutes before checking; same result. One final attempt and there was no change after leaving it untouched for 60 minutes. None of these 3 attempts created DDS.txt or Attach.txt, so I cannot post anything else here at this time.

Status: browser still redirects on searches & links. Firefox closed randomly, at least twice, just in the past few minutes. A random tab opened in Firefox and attempted to go to an unwanted website.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Could not boot up this morning. At login, Windows hung for more than 20 minutes at 'applying personal settings'. Powered off PC. Second attempt, same result. Third attempt, booted to last known good configuration. This worked and MS Security essentials reported and cleaned a trojan: surefef.ah. Hopefully that was not a false positive and something we needed for this fix, but it was the only way I could get logged in and take the next steps.

Turned off firewall, MS Security Essentials and Spybot per instructions. Rebooted and made sure all remained disabled. Ran ComboFix around 8:15AM, noted it backed up registry with no problem. At 8:18, noted AutoScan was running. About 20 minutes later, a ComboFix warning box appeared, stating PC is infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess. Clicked OK and window closed. I did not touch the ComboFix AutoScan window (understood that may cause CF to stall). At this time, I am still waiting for CF AutoScan to do anything new or output to log file.

...Windows powered off monitor due to inactivity...there is no activity light on the HDD...still not touching CF AutoScan or touching the PC in any way...still waiting...

PC's clock also froze at 8:33AM. After 2 hours of inactivity, I powered off the PC. Powered on, verified state of firewall, Spybot and MS Security Essentials (all off). Started ComboFix again at roughly 11:30AM.

12:20PM edit: ComboFix original window: green-block progress bar stopped at roughly 60% of the way across the screen. Black background window and green output shows it extracted a number of items, including firefox.exe, iexplore.exe and more. The last three lines of text:

Extract: streamtools.zip
Output folder: C:\32788R22FWJFW\N_
Output folder: C:\32788R22FWJFW

The screen stopped advancing at that point and has remained there for 60 minutes. All controls are grayed out - cannot cancel, <back, Close or X out to close the window. HDD activity light does flash occasionally, and it got much busier a few minutes ago. Then Explorer reported an error and was forced to close. I chose not to send error report to Microsoft. HDD activity has returned to occasional.

Still waiting and letting ComboFix run, if that is what it is doing.

Done. Powered off, powered back up, ended as many background processes as I could to drop the rogue IE sessions, printer control software and antivirus. Ran ComboFix /nombr per instructions and it worked...at least, it worked up until AutoScan, again. It looks like this (not copy/paste, just typed here from a different, clean computer):

"Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

AutoScan began at roughly 4:55. As before, I let it run without touching the window or running anything else. The next screen popped up and read:

"You are infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess! It has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack. This is a particularly difficult infection.

If for any reason that you're unable to connect to the internet after running ComboFix, reboot once and see if that fixes it.

If it's not fixed, run ComboFix one more time."

Clicked OK and AutoScan continued. Eventually, ComboFix stated it had found a rootkit virus and needed to reboot the machine. Clicked OK and it did so. Eventually, CF rebooted the machine a second time and prepared the following report:

Update on condition: twice so far without touching the computer, IE launched and went to facebook. I closed the program both times.

Greetings

that removed allot of stuff so lets see what these scans come up with

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Please download aswMBR to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • it will ask to download extra definitions - ALLOW IT
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

If you have any problems running either one come back and let me know

please reply with the reports from TDSSKiller and aswMBR
