Posted 12 April 2012 - 10:30 AM

Bought this computer used a while ago, I cleaned the inside of the tower (I do this periodically) installed Zone Alarm Security Suite, spybot, spyware blaster, ran MBAM and SAS scans... found a few issues, but seemed easily cleaned. Monitor has always had "flickers", shudders, sometimes clicks off/on...thought it was just the monitor. Last couple of months it really got slow, so I cleaned all my music (WAV files) and all other non-essential documents off, backed up, ran CCleaner, TFC, chkdsk (in safemode), defragged (I don't know a lot about computers, but I had problems with a previous computer and learned about these things). Started getting error messages in IE (this is the most common):

Debug Assertion Failed! Prog: C\:program files\internet explorer\iexplorer.exe
file: dbgheap.c
line 1132
expressions: _CrtIsValidHeapPointer(pUserdata)

This seemed to most commonly happen after being on YouTube, but that may be irrelevant. (This is a family computer, several users)

I have cleaned the tower again, ran chkdsk in safe mode, run CCleaner, defragged...and came here.
I've done my back-ups, ran defogger--it didn't ask for a reboot. Ran DDS OK. Tried to run GMER twice, and both times it crashed--got message that GMER encountered a problem and needed to close. The first time it crashed I tried to run it again and the system shut down a rebooted. When it rebooted I got the message that the system had encountered a serious error and wanted to send a message. I clicked don't send, but did save the info:

Error signature after running GMER:

BCCode : 1000000a BCP1 : 0000A210 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000001
BCP4 : 804F547C OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 256_1

Files that would be sent with error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\HP_ADM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERac48.dir00\Mini041212-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\HP_ADM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERac48.dir00\sysdata.xml

(I can send the files if they would be helpful).

I tried running GMER again and the same thing happened; I noticed that it was on \Device\NTPNP_10012 when it encountered the error. I didn't try to run again.

Was I supposed to turn off Teatimer or Zone Alarm to run these? I stayed with the computer and clicked the "allow" when I got messages...please let me know if I should turn these off and run again...

So I really don't know what's going on. I don't know if a virus or something is causing the monitor to act weird; I don't know what's causing the Debug assertion messages. I just want to make sure my computer is secure because I do banking and bill-paying on-line (I don't save passwords to my computer, or any documents with personal info).

Here is the DDS log; I appreciate anything you can do to help me...Thanks!

Hi nonyjan,

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Jason and I'll be helping you with your computer problems. You can call me by my screename jntkwx or Jason is fine.

Some things to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please do not attach logs or put logs in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can also help.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • If you don't understand a step, please ask for clarification before continuing with any future steps.

Click on the Watch Topic button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

:step1: It looks like you have run Combofix. Please post the Combofix log located at C:\Combofix.txt into your next reply. (If it exists.)

:step2: Please download a new version of GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver (this does include Spybot's Teatimer and Zone Alarm).
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

In your next reply, please include:
  • Combofix log, located at C:\Combofix.txt (if it exists)
  • GMER log
  • How's your computer running now? Please be as descriptive as possible.

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

I apologize for the delay in responding. I've been trying to sort things out. As I mentioned, the computer had gotten VERY slow and I tried the programs I mentioned to fix it. Then the debug assertion failed error messages started, so I felt perhaps there was a malware involvement and that I needed more help, so I posted here. However, when you mentioned a comboFix log, that raised some questions, because I would not run something like that without "supervision". So I checked, and there's no comboFix program or files on my computer, so I went to the kids. Turns out one (with a friend as an accomplice) tried running some stuff without telling me. (They now no longer have computer privileges). Apparently, it wasn't until after they tried their "fixes" that the Debug assertion Failed warnings started. I'm not sure what else they did--even they weren't sure of everything--but they did say they reset some internet options. I therefore went in and clicked the "reset to default" under Internet options. I also checked the add-on manager because we were getting the "an add-on for this site failed to run, check security settings" message. I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to be looking for, but I did see that the Zone Alarm add-ons were disabled, so I enabled them. There are some yahoo toolbar add-ons disabled too, but I wasn't sure about them, so I left them. However, between resetting to the default settings and enabling the Zone Alarm add-ons, it appears that the "debug assertion failed" messages have stopped--at least I haven't seen another one in the last couple of days since I got your message and made the changes. I'm hoping that problem is fixed. My apologies for wasting your time with that, but I didn't know.

The computer is still slow--it still seems to take forever to boot up, and for IE or my e-mail to open, but sometimes it seems better than others. But the monitor issue is still there. Sometimes it flashes to black and back on again instantaneously--it clicks like when it goes into hibernate mode, and almost looks like it cycles off/on in a flash. I just always assumed it was just a monitor issue (used monitor). But then it started this "stutter"--almost like the image shifts or resizes a little, or sometimes like a line or two doesn't scan properly. It does the shudder several times a minute--sometimes it will go through a period of almost constant stuttering, and then it straightens out and there are just little shifts. So I don't know if it's malware or just a bad monitor. When that happened combined with the error messages which I now know were brought about by user interference, I thought I had a real problem. Now I don't know if I do or not. But I ran the GMER program, so I'll post it and perhaps you can tell me if there's anything there, or if I should look at anything else now that we started, or if I can just forget about it. Again, my apologies for the red herrings...

I got a message that my post was too long, so I'll post the GMER in 2 parts. Thank you!

Hi nonyjan,

No problem with the delay responding. I'm glad it seems the "debug assertion failed" error has gone away! :)

As you said, I think the monitor problems are not malware related, but hardware related. The symptoms you described sound like the monitor is failing.

Your GMER log appears clean, so just to double check your computer is malware-free, please run Malwarebytes and ESET as described below.

:step1: Rerun Malwarebytes
Open Malwarebytes, click on the Update tab, and click the check for Updates button.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

:step2: I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

In your next reply, please include:
  • Malwarebytes log
  • ESET log
  • How's your computer running now?

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Here are the MBAM and ESET logs. I was a little concerned with ESET; it seemed I had to exit my Zone Alarm to run it. It seems a little illogical to turn off internet security to run an on-line malware scan that takes 4-5 hours...I did it, but how can we be certain nothing got in while Zone Alarm was off and I was on-line? It's a little disconcerting...

MBAM showed a clean scan (see below); ESET showed 4 items which had been quarantined a few weeks ago by TDSS-killer. This is not something I ran, so I'm assuming it was yet again my teen "helpers". However, it appears they did the right thing for a change, since it appears that program found and quarantined those items. Now I have a question: I did some research on TDSS-killer, and it appears that it's a pretty simple, yet powerful, program to use. (Unlike Combofix and GMER--I got the feeling I should only use those with the supervision of someone who actually knows what they're doing.) Is this TDSS-killer a program anyone could run without worrying about screwing something up? Although I have ZA and spybot running all the time, I also do periodic scans with MBAM and SAS (I alternate them every other month), thinking it doesn't hurt and you can't be too careful. Would it make sense to run TDSS-killer now and then too, just to check for malware that got past ZA and Spybot, or is that not a good idea? Also, am I wasting my time running everything I'm running--is there anything I should just discontinue and not bother with?

Other than that, I don't see any issues. I still have the monitor "stutter", but it's not intolerable, as long as it's not caused by malware. The computer's a little slow, but it's not brand-new (which is why we make a good pair), and perhaps it would perform better with more memory (like me--or perhaps I have too much running at one time--I often have Outlook, IE, and teatimer running together, and they take 80-100,000K each). Again, as long as it's not a maware issue, I can live with it.

So if you think we're clean, I guess I'm happy. I really appreciate your patience, and especially your understanding that my "helpful" kids created a red herring in all this. Lessons learned, even at my age. If you could just let me know about what I'm running, and what I should be running though, that would be great. Thank you so much for everything!

nonyjan,

While it's possible to become infected while your internet security/antivirus program disabled, it's not likely. Many infections nowadays are the result of vulnerabilities in common programs or Windows itself. Luckily, these vulnerabilities are patched by each company. So there's nothing really to worry about when temporarily disabling your antivirus/internet security (and actually, at Bleeping Computer, we routinely ask you to do this when running several of the malware removal tools, as leaving an antivirus/internet security program enabled blocks the tools from successfully running.)

Yes, they did do the right thing. Yes, TDSSkiller is a simple, yet powerful tool. However, in answer to your question - it is NOT something anyone could run without worrying about screwing something up. If you change the default fixes (Cure, Skip, etc.) for certain detected files, you can cause the computer to become unbootable. No, it does not hurt to run MBAB and SAS occasionally (in fact, I do that myself, and would recommend it). Just be sure you have the latest definitions/updates for each, otherwise it's not really worth scanning with outdated definitions. So going along with what I said about TDSSkiller, it wouldn't really make sense to run periodic scans with it, as it only detects specific infections. SAS and MBAM target a much broader range of infections.

You're not wasting your time with running everything, however I have several suggestions:
  • Spybot used to be a good anti-malware program, but lately its malware detection rate and its Teatimer functionality are not up to par with other scanners (namely MBAM and SAS). Therefore, I would recommend uninstalling Spybot.
  • ZoneAlarm can take up a lot of system resources. I would recommend uninstalling ZoneAlarm and installing one of several free antivirus software available.

    Microsoft Security Essentials

    Avast Free

    Avira Free

Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Your computer does appear clean of viruses/malware! You're welcome, I'm glad I can help. :)

I would recommend following the instructions in Slow Computer? It may not be malware

Let's take some preventative steps to ensure you don't get infected again:

:step1: Uninstall Combofix
Hold down the Windows key Posted Image and press the R key.
In the Run window, type the following bolded text and click OK:

Combofix.exe /Uninstall

:step2: Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

:step3: Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe (or jre-7u2-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

:step3: Like Java, outdated versions of Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader have vulnerabilities that malware can use to reinfect your computer. Please update to the latest, secure versions of each:

:step4: Make Internet Explorer more secure:
Hold down the Windows Key, and press the R key.
In the Run Dialog box, type: inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab,
Click Reset all zones to default level
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

:step5: Install the Latest Version of Common Software:
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ and http://www.calendarofupdates.com/updates/calendar.html.

I recommend FileHippo's update checker that scans your computer for programs it recognizes and allows you to easily download new versions of common software: http://filehippo.com/updatechecker/UpdateChecker.exe

:step6: Finally, read this tutorial and follow each of the steps:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html

Please feel free to post any future computer problems in the appropriate forum. Have a great day! :)
Regards,
Jason
