Yesterday Microsoft Security Essentials alerted me to Trojan:DOS/Alureon.E, tried to remove but it was unsuccessful. At the same time, the computer will not connect to the internet, can't connect to anything from any browser and am unable to ping websites from the command prompt. The GMER scan was crashing my computer so I ran it in safe mode and was successful.

At the present time, MSE is not alerting me to Alureon.E however I still can't connect to the internet.

am unable to ping websites from the command prompt.

Will you try this again as the results suggest that you should be able to do this - let me know how you get on.

Yes, I noticed that too but the computer is still the same. I cannot ping any websites from the command prompt, and none of the browsers will go to any website. In IE, I type the web address and then it tries to redirect to google, like when you type the address incorrectly and it gives you search results of what it thinks you're looking for, but it ends up at a page that says the address is not valid and "http:///" is displayed in the address bar.

Good evening. :)

Download Microsoft Fix it 50199 from here, run it and follow any prompts that it gives you and see if that allows you to connect to the internet.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Yes, that worked. Are there no virus's on my computer that you can tell? The internet problems happened at the same time as the virus warnings so I assumed they were related but since you haven't had me remove any virus, I'm questioning that now.

I was more concerned with getting the PC back online than looking for viruses. If that issue couldn't be resolved it would probably need a reformat and reinstall and that would have taken care of any nasties on the PC without further effort.

Pay a visit to the ESET Online Scanner.

  • Click the ESET Online Scanner button and a new window will open - you may need to maximise it.
  • Click the Run ESET Online Scanner button in the new window.
  • If you are using any other browser than IE, you will be prompted to download and run esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and the scan will run from within the window that the executable opens.
  • Regardless of which browser you are using, you will be shown some terms and conditions and you will need to accept these to continue.
  • If you are running IE for this scan you will then be prompted to allow an ActiveX component to be downloaded, unless you already have it installed, and the scan will run inside IE.
  • When you see the Computer Scan Settings window, you will need to make the following changes:

    • UNCHECK Remove found threats - this is important.
    • Check Scan archives
    • Click on Advanced settings
    • Check Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Once ready, click Start to begin - not a surprise really!
  • The anti-virus definitions will now be downloaded, so don't forget to allow them through your firewall if prompted.
  • The above will take a little time, so now is a good time to fire up the kettle and open the biccies.
  • Once the scan has completed you will be shown the results - assuming that the scanner has found anything.
  • Click List of found threats and then Export to text file... and save the log somewhere convenient.
  • You can then close out the scanner - don't bother uninstalling it as you may need to use it again.
  • Please post the contents of this file in your next reply, or let me know that nothing was identified.

Will you also let me know how the PC is behaving.

Finally, download OTL by OldTimer from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • Check the Scan All User box at the top.
  • Copy and paste the following into the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom:

    • netsvcs
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
      /md5start
      consrv.dll
      explorer.exe
      winlogon.exe
      Userinit.exe
      svchost.exe
      /md5stop
      C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
      %Temp%\smtmp\1\*.*
      %Temp%\smtmp\2\*.*
      %Temp%\smtmp\3\*.*
      %Temp%\smtmp\4\*.*
      >C:\commands.txt echo list vol /raw /hide /c
      /wait
      >C:\DiskReport.txt diskpart /s C:\commands.txt /raw /hide /c
      /wait
      type c:\diskreport.txt /c
      /wait
      erase c:\commands.txt /hide /c
      /wait
      erase c:\diskreport.txt /hide /c
      CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Once the scan has completed two notepad windows, OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt, will open - these text files will be saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please post the contents of both in your next reply - you may need to post each seperately if they are overly long.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Good evening. :)

Download aswMBR.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • When prompted "Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" click Yes - you may need to allow access through your firewall.
  • Click the Scan button to, well, start the scan - obvious really!
  • Once the scan reports "Scan finished successfully" click Save log.
  • On my system it offers to save it to the Desktop, which may or may not be it's default behaviour, but it's as handy a place as any.
  • You'll also see a file called MBR.dat appear as well - this is a backup that it created, just in case it's needed. Keep it handy for now.

I'd like the contents of aswMBR.txt in your next reply, if you'd be so kind.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Good evening. :)

As far as I can tell, the logs all look OK, so as long as the PC is behaving itself you're about done.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following, which is out of date:
Java™ 6 Update 20
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Your copy of Adobe Reader is out of date. You can get the latest version here, feel free to uncheck the McAfee download first, or you can update from within the program itself: Help > Check for Updates...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:
Create a new Restore Point with a memorable name - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future. If you use a Restore Point from before this point you may reinstall any infection that was present at the time, so only do so if using this latest one doesn't solve any issues.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.
Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet. It's a little old, but still contains some good ideas.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
As this issue appears to have been resolved, this thread is now closed.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
