I have had a monitor hooked to a 5 year old Dell XP desktop through a 20' long DVI cable. The mouse and the keyboard are connected through a powered usb hub and an equally long usb cable. This set up has worked fine for over a year.

Recently the computer would not detect the mouse or the keyboard intermittently. They got detected fine if I connected them to the desktop directly through short usb cables. I just replaced the usb hub, which seems to have solved the mouse and keyboard problem.

While I was trying to fix the usb problem, my monitor also became intermittently undetectable. The problem goes away if I connect the monitor through a short DVI cable.

Perhaps the DVI cable needed replacement.Check also connecting pins on both ends of monitor to tower.
