I am having a similar problem on another laptop of mine when I used SuperAntiSpyware. I have recently put comodo firewall on my computer and noticed it was it bit slower, after a week of this, I disabled comodo. Then I ran SAS, it only had tracking cookies on it which was removed. Soon after this I began having the BSOD show up when on the internet. I am able to type this message to you on the laptop, but after 30 min or hour or so, the BSOD could show up. Thank you for your help.

Please zip up the minidumps and attach the resultant zip file to your next reply so I can have a closer look:
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
  • Click on the first minidump file to select it.
  • Hold down the <Shift> key, and click on the last minidump file to select all of the files.
  • Release the <Shift> key.
  • Now, right-click on any one of the selected files > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The zip file will be located in the same place (the Minidump folder).
  • Attach the zip file to your next reply.
When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.

I tried to send to compressed folder, and it says no file read permission.

Please download BlueScreenView (in zip file)
  • Extract (right-click > Extract all) the contents of bluescreenview.zip.
  • Double-click on the BlueScreenView.exe file, to run the program. (No installation is required.)
  • When scanning is done (usually complete by the time the interface appears), go ...
    • Edit > Select All
    • File > Save Selected Items, and save the report to your Desktop as BSOD.txt.
    • Close the BlueScreenView window.
  • Open BSOD.txt using Notepad and go ...
    • Edit > Select All
    • Edit > Copy, and then paste the entire contents of the text file into your next reply.
(Let us know if no information is reported in the BlueScreenView interface: This means that there are no minidumps saved in the default location.)

Un-install Comodo and then re-start the computer.

If the problem still exists after doing that .... collect some more information: I'll have a look at it and help you try to resolve the problem.

:step1: Please follow the instructions: BSOD Posting Instructions: Windows 7 - Vista

(Note: When you run BSOD_Windows7_Vista_v2.64_jcgriff2_.exe, it will also run autoruns.exe ... and both need to be in the same location!)
... with one exception in the following line:
  • "4. Zip up the entire output folder + PERFMON and attach the zip file to your next post."
The BC forums will allow a total attachment size of only 512 kb (and what you need to attach will exceed this limit). Please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file. I will have a look at the contained information and see if I can shed some light on your BSOD issue.

See the suggestions in the following links for recommendations on file sharing websites:
  • http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/15-great-free-online-file-sharing-alternatives/
  • http://www.smashingapps.com/2008/08/28/5-best-free-file-hosting-services-to-store-your-files.html

:step2: Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.
  • It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.

:step3: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click Go.
When the scan is finished, a text file will open in a Notepad window.
  • Copy the entire contents of the Notepad window, and paste in your reply.
(Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.)

I uninstalled comodo and it seemed i did not have the BSOD, at least the first day. Today I see that it is still a problem. I followed your list of instructions. I have uploaded to Mediafire a file called Perfmon+ . It was done today 4-9-12. Dont know what else you need.
I have saved the two programs to a folder- not sure if you needed me to do anything with them. (autorun and jcgriff2)

Please read and follow the instructions provided in steps 1 and 2 of my previous post.

:step1:

1. Download these 2 files; save to Documents -
· A. SysInternals AutoRuns - http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe
· B. BSOD File Collection app - http://sysnative.com/0x8/BSOD_Windows7_Vista_v2.64_jcgriff2_.exe

2. RIGHT-click on B, select "Run as Administrator"
· Output = new folder Windows7_Vista_jcgriff2 in Documents

3. Run System Health Report -
START | type perfmon /report | save as HTML file

4. Zip up the entire output folder + PERFMON and attach the zip file to your next post.

You need to actually run the jcgriff2 application to produce the output in a new folder called Windows7_Vista_jcgriff2, which you will find in Documents
  • Put the PERMON report into that folder. Then, zip up the Windows7_Vista_jcgriff2 folder and upload to your file-sharing site.
  • You then need to provide me with a link, so that I can find and download what you have uploaded.

:step2: Please actually publish the Speccy report as in the instructions, and then provide me with a link to the published report.

Here is the link:
My link

Not sure why its not highlighted. Also I downloaded speccy and ran it and it will not allow me to "publish". I tried downloading the zip file too, same thing. It runs properly, I can go to file and see publish is "greyed in"

Thanks: Got the jcgriff2 information.

Now to Speccy: Not sure why "Publish" would be greyed out and unavailable. Try the following:
  • Run Speccy.
  • Go to File > Save snapshot.
  • Save using the default name and file extension (which will be .speccy) to the Desktop.
  • Zip up that .speccy file and attach to your reply:
  • When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.

10 minidumps were available. I looked at the 5 most recent, all from this month, and all reported exactly the same thing.
  • There is a problem with the Toshiba hard drive.
The System Event Log showed plenty of Disk errors, along with others, all indicating exactly the same thing.

From the System Event Log:

Test a Toshiba branded hard disk drive using SeaTools for DOS run from a bootable CD.

Note: I suggest that you backup important personal files to safe and separate device, before proceeding with the following, knowing already that there is a problem with the hard drive.
:step1: Please download SeaTools for DOS (CD) from Seagate's SeaTools for DOS web page

or use the following direct download link to download the latest version of SeaTools for DOS:
Download SeaTools for DOS ISO Image

The downloaded file name is SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO
:step2: Burn the downloaded .ISO image to a CD using the appropriate burning software.
  • If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
    • Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.
    • Choose Write image file to disc.
    • Under Source, click on the Browse button: Navigate to and select the .ISO file that you wish to burn.
    • Place a check-mark in the box beside Verify.
  • Click Posted Image

When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step3: Boot from the CD.
  • (You may need to access the BIOS Setup Menu or the Boot Menu and change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • From Basic tests on the Main Menu, run the Short test and then the Long test.

(The long test will take some considerable time to complete.)
The results will be shown as either a PASS or FAIL.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
  • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
Note: You may wish to view the following ...
Please let us know the results of the tests.

the short test was passed. the long test failed. "possibly caused by sector which are difficult to read". apparently I can use a seagate warranty to get a new hard drive. All I have is a receipt from fry electronics store. Seatools could not repair the hard drive. Do I need to get a new hard drive? and would it be covered?

I never had a problem until comodo installation and then SAS scan. Did it overwhelm my system? would like to know so I dont end up doing the same to my other computer systems. Thank you.

Comodo seems to cause problems for a lot of people, so I suggest not using that at all, but neither Comodo nor SAS is likely to be in any way responsible for the hard drive issue. Problems with hard drives happen regardless of whatever software you might be running on them.

I had a quick search back through the system event log and this looks like the first occasion of disk-related problems being reported near the end of February:

As I understand the situation, Seagate has bought out Toshiba. However, do not know the procedure for claiming warranty on your Toshiba hard drive. You might have to do some investigation. If you need help with this, let me know, and I will ask around here.

Note: about your other topic with Elise.
It is under control: Please be patient and await a response from Elise. She will reply with the next step as soon as she is able.

Ensure that you have everything of importance backed up to a safe location before proceeding.

We have no way of knowing how bad the hard drive problem may be, but it may be only a minor issue and able to be overcome using chkdsk.

Use the Windows Error Checking utility (Check Disk), with the options to fix file system errors and scan the disk surface for errors, attempt recovery of data and repair the disk.
  • Go to Start > Computer.
  • Right-click on the drive that you wish to check > Properties > Tools tab
  • In the "Error checking" section, click on Check now.
  • Place a checkmark in both boxes > Start.
  • If the disk you have chosen is the Windows system disk:

A message will notify you that a restart is necessary ask "Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?".
  • Click Schedule disk check > OK and close all windows.
  • Re-start the computer. The disk will be checked when the system boots.
This will take some time to run and at times may appear stalled but just let it run.
When the disk check is complete, the system will re-start automatically and load Windows.
A log of the disk check is recorded only if the scheduled re-start is used, and only for drives on the same HDD as the Operating System.
To open Event Viewer and view the log:
  • Go to Start > and type eventvwr and press the <ENTER> key.
The Event Viewer window will open.
  • In the left pane, expand "Windows Logs" and then click on Application.
  • In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically.
  • Look in the Source column for "Wininit", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check.
  • Click on that Wininit entry to select it.
  • On the top main menu, click Action > Copy > Copy Details as Text.
  • Paste the log text into your next reply.
