Hi all,

I have a problem (well several I suspect) with my trusty old laptop which I’ve been trying to sort out for about 10 days now, but whatever I try to do, it just seems to get worse. If it comes to it, I can do a full hard drive format, but would like to have a go at fixing the problem first though if possible.

I have read the posting guidelines, and realise that ideally, I should tackle one problem at a time. However, I suspect all the problems are inter-related, and to be honest, I don’t know which problem to tackle first!

Anyway, this may take a while but I’ll try and describe the order of events (at least as best as I can remember!) so here goes……

The laptop is a Dell Latitude C640. It is running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 with Service Pack 3, and was using the Free AVG 2011 Anti Virus program when the problems started.

At first AVG started putting up a message when I started the computer saying that it had updated itself and needed to re-boot for changes to take effect. Each time I re-booted though, I got the same message. Then I also started getting (and still am getting) an error message about rundll32.exe. At the top of the message it says rundll32.exe - Bad Image. Below that in the dialogue it says App or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System 32\spool\drivers\W32X86\3\LXBXtime.dll is not a valid Windows image. If I cancel that I then get another error message saying RUNDLL in the message header and the dialogue says Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\W32X86\3\LXBXtime.dll

Once these messages were cancelled and I postponed the requested re-boot from AVG the laptop was running pretty much as normal.

I have since uninstalled AVG 2011 and installed AVG 2012, currently on trial but have ordered the full CD version for which I am awaiting delivery. I did a full scan with AVG 2012 and fixed any problems it found. This did not solve the RUNDLL problem though. I then went online to try to find solutions to the RUNDLL problem but things have gradually got worse. Whenever I tried to go online and search for solutions to the RUNDLL problem, each time I clicked on a link I got taken to a website totally unrelated to the link in the search.

On top of that, at boot up I am now getting another error message saying that “Shaving Registry has encountered a problem and cannot start”. Microsoft Office keeps trying to re-install (I can open Excel after ignoring several requests to re-install Office, but not Word), and I am also getting a message occasionally (but not every time) on re-boot saying that there is a problem with Nokia Suite.

I managed to install Malwarebytes and ran a full scan. Malwarebytes found 774 instances of a Zbot virus which it then removed. I have run it several times since and it is now finding no more threats. All the problems above remain though, except AVG no longer keeps asking me to re-boot since I installed AVG 2012.

I cannot run an AVG scan because it will not open. It starts to open, bringing up only parts of the normal AVG main page but then freezes every time.

I cannot start in Safe Mode. I just get the blue ‘screen of death’. It says a problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage. I’ve tried several times and get the same message each time, whether I try with normal Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking or with command prompt. The technical information at the bottom of the post reads:-

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7996528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Additionally, there is now a problem with the keyboard as well. When I reboot, the mouse and cursor work ok, but as soon as I press any key on the keyboard (even just trying to toggle Caps Lock), the whole computer freezes, including the cursor, requiring a re-boot to let me use the mouse again.

I cannot connect to the internet through Firefox or IE. Firefox opens at the home page, but puts up a message saying it cannot connect, and IE just refuses to open at all. Strangely however, I can still launch Malwarebytes, and even get it to go online and update!

Finally, although I cannot open AVG, it still appears to be running. While doing the last Malwarebytes scan it flagged up an AVG LinkScanner Alert. The file name is :-

zasropa.uni.me/main.php?page=5a29ba77101d9c16

And the threat name is:-

Exploit Blackhole Exploit Kit (type 2156)

AVG blocked the threat.

AVG also brought up a warning a couple of days ago (which I stupidly did not write down) about a possible Win32/DH threat, but it has not come up again since.

Is there anything I can do to sort this lot out, or should I just re-format the hard drive and move on!

Finally, sorry for the long post and thanking you in advance for any help anybody may be able to provide,

Martin Frost.

Hi,

Just an update on the above. I seem to have resolved the issue with the LXBXtime.dll file. It is a file associated with the Lexmark Printer Software (which I had uninstalled some time ago). I re-installed the Lexmark software from the original disc, and then un-installed agin via Control Panel/ Add_Remove software. I am now not getting the error messages coming up as before in relation to this problem.

Also, I have deleted the Shaving Registry file which apparently is a programme installed with Fuji FinePix software and is not needed by windows. That error message is now not coming up either.

However, I have still not resolved the issue with the keyboard, and still cannot boot to Safe Mode, but I'm working on it! :-)

Will report back as and when I make more progress.

Regards,

Martin.

Hello Cheffy21,

My name is ratman and and I will be helping you with your computer problems.

Before we begin, I would like to make a few things clear so that we can fix your problem as efficiently as possible:

  • Be sure to follow all my instructions carefully! If there is anything you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please do not do anything or perform other steps unless I have asked you to do so.
  • Please make sure you post all logs I ask you to, and make sure that the entire log gets posted.

====================================================================================

Try this please. You will need a USB drive. Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert it back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

Hi Ratman,

Thanks very much for your reply and your assistance.

I've tried what you suggested but I cannot get the infected computer to read the driver.sh file on the memory stick from the xPUD screen. I downloaded the driver.sh file to a folder of it's own on a memory stick, plugged the memory stick into the infected computer, booted the computer, opened the xPUD screen and navigated to the folder on the memory stick where I had downloaded the driver.sh file, but it is not there. I have tried 3 times. The driver.sh file is definately on the memory stick when I search for it on the good computer prior to plugging it into the infected computer, but when I plug the memory stick back into the good computer after having plugged it into the infected computer it has gone.

Could the virus be recognising the driver.sh file and deleting it to prevent me using it to fix the computer?

Thanks again,

Martin.

Hi,

Could the virus be recognising the driver.sh file and deleting it to prevent me using it to fix the computer?

I wouldn't have thought so, but let's try this another way.

This time we're not going to use a cd:

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

Hello Cheffy21,

Please download ComboFix from the followingl location:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop.
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications including Firewalls, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • Double click on Combofix icon Posted Image & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

====================================================================================

I'd like you to run a scan with aswMBR
Please download aswMBR to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

====================================================================================

In your next reply, please copy/paste the contents of the following:
  • C:\Combofix.txt
  • aswMBR Log

How's your machine running now?

I'm now able to start in Safe Mode, but I still cannot use the keyboard (in either normal or safe mode). As soon as I press any keyboard key the computer freezes.

Thanks again,

Hello Cheffy21,

Looks good.

Is there another keyboard you can try using to see if it behaves the same.

I'd like you to run a scan with MBAM:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

Download Link 1

Download Link 2Malwarebytes' may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to this Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes' when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

How is your machine running now?

Hi Martin,

Let's try deleting the keyboard driver in Device Manager:
  • Click Start, right click My Computer and select Properties
  • Select Hardware tab and click on Device Manager
  • Select Keyboards, right click on your Keyboard and select Uninstall
Now reboot your machine.

How is it behaving now?

Hi Ratman,

Ok, just done that. When the computer re-boots it's the same as it was before and the keyboard is showing up again in Device Manager. There is a yellow circle with an exclamation mark next to the keyboard. In the keyboard properties it says 'This device cannot start (Code 10)'

Cheers,

Martin.

Hello Cheffy21,

Hmm, interesting! Malware appears to have gone but seems to have left this problem. Rest assured we will get to the bottom of it.

We need to run an OTL Custom Scan.

  • Please download OTL from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:

    This is THE Mirror
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste all of the following code into the Posted Image textbox.
    /md5start
    i8042prt.sys
    /md5stop
  • Push Quick Scan
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click the OK button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
====================================================================================

In your next reply, please copy/paste the contents of the following:
  • OTL Report

Hello Cheffy21,

I'd like you to run a batch file which may give me some info to help with the next fix:

Please open Notepad in your desktop (right click on desktop > New > Text Document):

Copy/paste the contents of the following box into Notepad:

@echo off
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" /s > "%UserProfile%\desktop\reglog.txt"

Click File > Save As...
In Save as type drop down menu select All Files.
In File name box type Keyreg.bat and click Save
Double click Keyreg.bat on your desktop
A file reglog.txt will appear on your desktop. Please copy/paste it's contents in your next reply.
regards, ratman
