I hope I'm in the right forum for this. I'm fairly good at fixing problems through trial-and-error, but I'm definitely a layman when it comes to technical terms.

I managed to catch RootKit0Access & its associated redirects. I've tried, I thought successfully, to remove it via MalwareBytes and TDSSkiller, but I don't seem to be removing the problem completely. I'm also concerned I've exacerbated the problem through my ignorance; TDSS has quarantined a dozen files of unknown origin. I keep getting the redirects after a few searches on Google & now I cannot access blogger.com or log in to Gmail, which is a bit of a problem because I maintain my company's blog through blogspot.

Finally, I've deleted my logs on MalwareBytes and tried a system restore in a last-ditch effort for sanity. Even trying this in safe mode, my system restore was unsuccessful.

The only other anomaly I've encountered is that when I open a second tab in Internet Explorer, & it asks "what you want to do next," the only option that now appears is "learn more about tabs & shortcuts...," but if you click it, it goes nowhere.

Please tell me what I need to provide so you can help me through this conundrum.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Before I can suggest any remedial tool I need to know more about your system.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post.

Your Hosts file was compromised.
How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

Use the Fix it button on the page.
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be an open door for an infection

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
===

Please post the logs and let me know what problem persists.

With the Symantec, I'm not sure what to do to update it. Every time I try, it runs through quickly and says it's current, but obviously it is not. Does this have something to do with our server? Would it not be current there either?

Okay. Things have been getting much better & you helped me get rid of some program shells that have been kicking around my computer forever despite my best efforts. I checked with blogger.com to see if I could get in & was successful logging in, but now I ran mbam & it claims rootkit is back. Did I bring it back by going into a google product or am I just nod completely rid of my curse?

The rootkit.Oaccess items found were in the restore point. They have now been quarantined and deleted. Nothing to worry about.

With the Symantec, I'm not sure what to do to update it. Every time I try, it runs through quickly and says it's current, but obviously it is not. Does this have something to do with our server? Would it not be current there either?

This matter should be taken up with Symantec.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

ClearJavaCache::

Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Let me know what problem persists.

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.

Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Include in your download" this is not required. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

If interested in security I would download the tool and run it.

What is jacvavy? I seem to remember having problems regarding it in the past. In fact, I think this is about the time I started having problems with Microsoft updates.

I am still not able to load Microsoft KB2656353.

By the way, thank you much for your continued help. I don't think I can give the problem-solvers here enough thanks!!

OK new development. Please post the result of this scan.

  • Download OTL to your Desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
