OK, I've gone through the basic removal steps outlined and have really whittled down the spyware on this laptop. My HJT log follows.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello Ralph and welcome to the forum. You have some nasties that need to be removed and we need to do this one first:
http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.look2me.html

I see Webroot Spysweeper in your log, do you own this program? If so it will remove Look2me. Make sure you update the program first, then do a sweep and post that log for me along with a new HJT log.
I you do not own Spysweeper, I believe you are getting no benefits if the trial is over and suggest you consider uninstalling it to save the resources it uses.

If you do not own Spysweeper, then we will use these instuctions, to remove Look2me. Please note there is no reason to run this fix if you used SS.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/images/lib/MSWINSCK.OCX

More info:

If for some reason Look2Me-Destroyer doesn't reopen check that task scheduler is running.
If it isnt you can use sc.exe to start it

start>run sc start schedule press enter.

Restart the computer and post the Spysweeper results OR the Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HJT log. We will have more to do.

Thanks...pskelley

Hi pskelley - thanks for your quick reply. I didn't expect it so soon.

Actually, its just the demo of SS installed, which is quite useful for detecting, and Look2Me is at the top of its list. The laptop that generated this log is owned by a student that I support, so I'll have to wait a day or so to get it back from her to run the remover that you have so kindly pointed me towards.

Will be back with you shortly after running the remover, and thanks again!

Hi pskelley. OK, after downloading the look2me fixer and double clicking it, here's what I got:

Component 'mswinsck.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

Suggestions?

Thanks - Ralph

Hello Ralph, would you please reread the instructions for using the Look2Me-Destroyer.exe

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/images/lib/MSWINSCK.OCX

It is very important that you read and understand these instructions before executing them.

thanks...pskelley

Hi again, pskelley. Sorry about the confusion! For some reason, I didn't get the runtime error 339, just the error message that I quoted to you. I guess I should have recognized the filename.

Anyway, I ran the fixer after downloading the mswinsck.ocx, and I'm not getting the popups from look2me anymore. I guess that means I'm ready to proceed to remove the other baddies on this laptop.

Here's the latest HJT log - by the way, I couldn't find the c:\look2me-destroyer.txt file, even after searching the entire c: drive.

Thanks again, pskelley! I really appreciate your help - Ralph

OK guy, no problem, did you look here: C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt I can live without it as it appears to have killed the infection. Now we have a nasty and I am not sure, but It appears to be one of two which may be the same thing with different names  This happens a lot because the AV companies all call the junk something different. You need to look at the information under all tabs in both links, I can remove the stuff but I can't repair any damage done and you may learn in the information how to prevent this from happening again. There is no doubt that your security has been compromised and you need to take action.
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32tilebotak.html
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...pybot.abdo.html

Please follow these instructions in the posted order. Please note with SS and ewido onboard they will be using some resources so expect that. We will be setting ewido to manual once we are finished so it will use no resources unless you start it. Please turn off Spysweeper so it can not interfere with our fix.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

3) Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to Local Security Authority Subsystem Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type lsass and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...refetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Your Java program is out of date and a security issues, see the information in the link: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\npjpi142_03.dll

I was able to follow your instructions exactly, except for the lsass service. When I ran the services utility, the lsass was already stopped. I was able to disable it and then delete the service, so I accomplished the goal. The laptop is now running much, much better! However, if you see more stuff on here, let's soldier on and dig it all out. I almost hate to give it back to the student after we're done, since I'm sure she'll just start the reinfection process all over again!

Thanks again for all the great advice. I really do appreciate it very much!

OK Ralph, both the ewido scan and the HJT log are clean. I see evidence of other infections in that ewido log that appear to have not been completely removed, Vundo in particular. Here is some good information to look over:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/commun...s/IEtopten.mspx
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Ea...rs_article.html

My suggestion at this point would be to turn off ewido, it can still be started manually and updated free for as long as you wish. I suggest once the trial is over that Spysweeper be uninstalled. Both of those programs are using lots of resources right now. If you ever need a look to see what may be on the computer, update and run ewido and it will remove what it finds. If you get serious, use this: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner While it won't remove the bad stuff for the free price, it will locate it and a boot to safe mode and manual removal will get rid of the stuff.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/2520/how-did-i-get-infected/
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

Last but not least: System Restore does not know good from bad, it backs up everything. In case some of the infection got into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, restart your computer and turn it back on.

Safe surfing...Phil
