How far can an IP be traced down to? (Generally).

I know it varies. When I do a simple lookup it only comes up with the city. I'm talking about IP's used by household users and ones supplied to them by their ISP.

Generally speaking, if a law enforcement agency or the FBI (USA) wanted to find your information such as your location and your name all they would have to do is get a warrant and had it to your isp then they would hand over your information to them because they have to by court order. If you are talking about a normal person on the internet trying to find information about you using your ip it would be somewhat difficult.

If I have replied to a topic and you reply and I haven't gotten back to you within 48 hours (2 days) then send me a P.M.

To add a little more information. Most home user IP's are dynamic meaning they can and do change. So having IP information today doesn't necessarily mean the same user will have the same IP a week or a month from now.

The Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life.
