Hi There,
I'm new and I don't know what to do. Last night I think my laptop caught the SMART HDD virus. I got those fake dialog boxes that told me that my system was corrupt or had errors. It appeared to run a really fast scan and of course told me I had problems to be fixed for a price. And it hid all programs and my screen was black except for the SMART dialog box. I knew what was happening but I don't know if I messed up my laptop or what. I really couldn't do anything last night it was so late, so I just shut down. I did a search for this virus this morning at work and it brought me here for various fixes. So, I did what one guide suggested and downloaded Rkill, Malwarebytes and uhide.exe onto a jump drive and printed the instructions so that I could come home and try to run these from the jump drive as suggested. I turned on my laptop and it was starting up but then the blue screen came on. I let it restart itself and I tried to start in safe mode instead, same thing happened. I tried safe mode with netwoking, same thing. So now my computer won't get past this blue screen to try to run RKill or Malwarebytes or anything. I'm very worried I have lost everything, there are a lot of photos on my laptop, my husband is a photographer and almost all his photos are on this laptop. Most are backed up to an external, but its been about a week since the last backup and in between he's had several photo shoots. Please help and I apologize if I have posted incorrectly or in the wrong place, I don't know much about this stuff and this has never ever happened to me before with ANY computer.
Thanks

:welcome:

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh by noahdfear to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe by noahdfear to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Once this process is completed, download Dumpit by noahdfear to the USB drive.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Close the Open Terminal.
  • Confirm that you see the file dumpit in your USB drive and double click on it.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in your USB drive named mbr.zip
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.zip file must be attached to your reply.

all was okay until I clicked on the link for Dumpit, it opened another web page with a bunch of characters. Was it supposed to do that? and if so, how do I save that to the USB?

Download xPUD_MBRfix and save it in the USB drive.

  • Boot the ailing computer to xPUD
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Double click on xPUD_MBRfix to execute the script and wait.
  • If asked, select sda as the drive and Windows 7 as the Operating System.
  • Upon finishes, its actions will produce a report (mlog.txt)
  • Post that report in your next reply
Boot in Normal Mode. If able to boot, run Combofix as follows:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link or this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Install the Recovery Console if prompted.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" .
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

User has chosen Windows 7 boot code
User has chosen drive sda
Backing up mbr to backup_sda.bin

Boot code structure before fix
/dev/sda has an x86 boot sector,
it is an unknown boot record

Boot code structure after repairing
/dev/sda has an x86 boot sector,
it is a Microsoft 7 master boot record, like the one this
program creates with the switch -7 on a hard disk device.

Lets check for remnants:

  • Launch and update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

ESET online scannner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • First please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This topic.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.
  • Next hold down Control then click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on Start.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.

  • All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

    Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

  • Now click on Start.
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on Finish.
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

I'm having trouble with the ESET scanner. I did everything, then when I click start to download the virus signature database, it tells me "Cannot get update. Is proxy configured?" I thought I followed the steps exactly. I'm pretty sure the McAfee is turned off.
