Hello & thank you in advance for your time.

I'm running Win XP Pro with AMD dual core w/3gig mem. Using Task Manager shows 100% CPU usage when watching online videos as well as a few other task. Most importantly, Pro Tools 7.4 audio editing software, which is very resource intensive, will totally freeze, making it impossible to use. If I idle on desktop, system is fine. I've tried several pgms to find virus with no luck. This happened last yr. & had to buy new hard drive. Now it's hit the new drive. Reformatting drive didn't cure problem. Please help. I'm willing to try anything.

Hello Broni,

Glad to be aboard. You guys do a terrific job from what I've seen.

I download all requested pgms. and all went well except for MBAM. Error: 53 File not found: mbamnet. Tried 3x with same results. Rebooted computer, then it asked to update database, even though I had chosen that option at the beginning, but then pgm completed.
All reports are following & I have copy of MBR on desktop. Thank you for your support.

I don't see anything malicious there, so far.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.

Upload the file(s) here: http://uploadmb.com/
Copy the link inside the Direct Link box and post it in your next reply.

Here's the link to procept.txt

http://www.uploadmb.com/dw.php?id=1333202784

Through observation it seems that this problem occurs anytime there is a drastic change in the demand on system resources. When watching video online, audio & video is ok while there is not much action on screen. A sudden increase in action freezes video but audio is still ok. Going to my webmail will sometimes freeze. Trying to export a file from my audio software is impossible. Anytime there is intense mathematical computations. It would almost seem to be a hardware issue if it hadn't stopped when I bought a new hard drive last June. Up until 2 weeks ago everything was fine. I depend on audio production to eek out a living after I lost my programming job a couple of years ago so you can imagine how desparate I am. Thanks you for all your help Broni!

CPU usage is perfectly normal.

Your Device Manager indicates some issue with SM Bus Controller driver.
Go to your computer manufacturer site, download and install chipset driver.
Let me know how it went.

why did my last post disappear? The update of SM Bus controller driver did not help. I posted a screen shot of Task Manager running 93% CPU usage & all that is gone.

I have no idea what happened.

Try to get another log from Process Explorer when CPU usage actually spikes.

Couple of possibilities...

Does the spike happen when using Firefox?
I can see very high CPU usage by "plugin-container.exe".
Disable it: http://techdows.com/2010/07/how-to-disable-plugin-container-exe-process-of-firefox.html and let me know if CPU usage gets back to normal.
You may need to restart computer.

The post I made last night disappeared too. ?? I disabled plugin container & rebooted. No Change. I then renamed plugin container.exe so firefox could not access it then firefox.exe became the culprit. Jumping to over 90% CPU usage. IE does same thing.

Check Primary and Secondary IDE settings: Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary or Secondary IDE Channel -> Properties -> Advanced Settings. Look at the Current Transfer Mode field.
See, if it's in PIO mode instead of DMA mode.
