Hello, one day I was trying to download something and my computer said I was out of memory. I knew I had MANY Gigabytes left on my computer, so I double-checked on "My Computer" and it said I had 0 memory left. Later when I was using my computer it said that my memory was back to about 23GB, so later I tried to use the internet but I couldn't load videos and I got a message in the lower-right of my screen saying that I'm low on memory. And I checked the memory and it was back to zero. Later it went up to about 80Mb or something and then went back to zero. I'm currently at 0. I also tried deleting files to see if my memory would go up but it didn't it stayed at zero. I've never heard of this happening before and it seems virtually nobody has ever had this problem before. I can access the internet a little bit at a time, but I can't usually watch videos- although sometimes it lets me.

Thanks a lot for your help if you have any idea what the !@#$ I'm supposed to do!

Hello and :welcome: To Bleeping Computer!

To start off can you please post your system specs. Also if you can remember when this started and any programs or issues that may have led up to this that would be great. Do you have an anti virus/malware installed?

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)
System Manufacturer: HP
Syst. Model: HP Compaq nw8440 (RD294UP#ABA)
BIOS: KBC Version 40.15
Processor: Genuine Intel® CPU T2600 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Page file: 1106MB used, 1352MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Is this what you wanted? Ya, the problem started a while back but I couldn't tell if it was a virus and I hadn't been doing anything weird when it happened that I know of. I thought it was a virus but nothing else happened and when I searched online and found no complaints about a virus like this. I have limited AVG on my computer- and I haven't downloaded any antivirus since because I can't(memory problem). Windows Security Center: Firewall(ON) Automatic Updates(ON) Virus Protection(OFF)"Windows has found multiple antivirus programs on your computer but they all report that they might be out of date or are turned off...". I know all my downloads are scanned for viruses(or at least were 'till my memory problem). Thanks a lot for the help!

PS I don't know how to get notifications that someone's responded to me, so I probably won't be able to respond instantly

Hello this is possibly a malware.
Gave you scanned with your antivirus?

I am moving this from XP to the Am I Infected forum to run a couple scans.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Posted Image and save it to your desktop.
  • Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.
Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you cannot update Malwarebytes or use the Internet to download any files to the infected computer, manually update the database by following the instructions in FAQ Section A: 4. Issues.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.

-- Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes and other security tools to keep them from running properly. If that's the case, go to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes Anti-Malware folder > Tools > click on Malwarebytes Chameleon and follow the onscreen instructions. The Chameleon folder can be accessed by opening the program folder for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware).

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Ok Thank GOD I was able to download those programs. I ran minitoolbox and Malwarebites last night. I just posted the minitoolbox results but Malwarebites said no items were found. I then ran a full scan and still no security risks were found.. I'll go ahead with the GMER scan then. Currently my computer says I have something like 180Mb of free space (I actually have over 100x that).

I was just noticing this
========================= Partitions: =====================================

1 Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:93.15 GB) (Free:0.3 GB) NTFS

Please run GMER and then.. I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

this scan took several hours- hope it helps! yeah I noticed the .3GB thing, what do you think it means? Something deeper in the system went awry? It's a good/was a good CPU but it's like 6 yrs old. Like I said I did have many GB and then before I dled anything it was at zero. Then it went back up and back down and now it's about 160Mb it says. When I deleted stuff it gained no memory. Thanks for ur help. Any clues as to wtf? I'll do the other scan now I guess.

Do you think the online scan will help? It says it'll take a long time and I can't click the ESET link for non-IE(internet explorer) esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe. If you rlly think it'll help I'll try it as soon as I'm done using my computer for other things (I assume the scan will take hours like the other). I just did a quick check to find an alternate legit site I could get the online ESET scan but there was a problem with security(ESET gives away personal info apparently). Is yours a newer version? Thx a million for ur help I'll try to respond ASAP to any comments or ideas yu have

Ok, we can hold of on ESET, You can run it later. Unfortunately theere are no shortcuts in removal. I am concerned that there is a deeper infection.
You also have exploitable security leaks that need attention.

This is quick.
Please download TDSSKiller.zip and and extract it.
  • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
  • Click Start scan.
  • When it is finished the utility outputs a list of detected objects with description.
The utility automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects.
The utility prompts the user to select an action to apply to suspicious objects (Skip, by default). Let the options as it is and click Continue
  • Let reboot if needed and tell me if the tool needed a reboot.
  • Click on Report and post the contents of the text file that will open.

Note: By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder. The Log has a name like: TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). Hey. I ran the scan but there was no log and no security risks found. It did not require a reboot. The scan only took tens of seconds (I assume is norm). I believe I ran security scans with AVG or something right after the problem first set in and nothing was found. You said I have a security risk and I'm sure ur right- should I reinstall AVG and turn it on now? Do you recommend I use a diff antiviral program till we've sorted this out?//and what's the next step for solving the problem? Should I try deleting other stuff to see if it increases my memory now? Maybe it'll go back to zero if I delete stuff :P

Well I cannot see anything to cause this memory issue, but we can get a deeper look.

On the leaks. Yes turn on the AV or Your AVG is outdated. So download this free AV (I use this) and Save it to the desktop. ĽAvira Antivir

Now go to Control panel add/remove and Uninstall AVG. Reboot
Make sure all 3 are gone
AVG 2011 (Version: 10.0.1390)
AVG 2011 (Version: 10.0.1391)
AVG 2011 (Version: 10.0.1392)
While there Uninstall the Ask and Google Toolbars

Install ,update and scan with Avira.
See if the issue is Ok now.

NOTE on the download page you want this one
Windows x86 (32-bit) Offline 19.38 MB .... jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe (or jre-7u3-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Similarly Update to Adobe Reader X (10.1.0)
Note UN check the box so you do not install the toolbar, unless you really want it..

Free! Google Toolbar search Google from any web page, block pop-ups

Yes, install Google Toolbar - optional

I'm sending this just to let you know I'm still doing what you said. I've been waiting to see if my memory will fluctuate up again so that I can download your Avira Antivirus Software because right now I'd have no memory left. My memory's now well below 100Mb but I think it's cause of the dls I did here. Do you think I should just try and use AVG (I think it's a smaller file) or another AV? I also don't know if deleting extra stuff will actually increase my freespace or even decrease it. Crazy a$$ computer

Run the aVG ... and see what happens.

I usually do these last but it will free up space.

Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Vista Users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point and Disk Cleanup.
