My Windows 7 update problem is resolved. I am not exactly sure which of the 30+ things I tried actually fixed the problem.

Before going to bed last night I ran CHKDSK on my System Partition.

This morning I tried Windows Update and it worked! CHKDSK was suggest by Microsoft in one of the forum posts. I did not expect that to be the issue. I watched much of the CHKDSK process run and did not see any errors.

Case closed (for now).

How to Read the Event Viewer Log for Check Disk (chkdsk) in Windows

Still smells like malware to my untrained eye. You might want to double check to see if the Security Center Service in services.msc is started & set to Automatic, these errors are from your Minitoolbox.exe scan results a few posts above this one:

Thanks for the advice. I was having unexplained problems with Microsoft security. After Chkdsk, the Security Service is running.

For security on my Win 7 (64-bit Home premium) machine I am running the following: Microsoft Firewall, Microsoft Security essentials and AVG 2012. Microsoft Defender is turned off. Do you reccommend any other security applications for my computer?

I will rerun Minitoolbox and post the results in the next post.

>>>I am running the following: Microsoft Firewall, Microsoft Security essentials and AVG 2012<<

From your minitool log under installed programs:

AVG 2012 (Version: 12.0.1913)
AVG 2012 (Version: 12.0.2114)
AVG 2012 (Version: 2012.0.1913)

Microsoft Security Essentials (Version: 2.1.1116.0)

Before you go any further I would uninstall 1 of the 2 (uninstalling AVG & keeping MSSE would be my choice of action, YMMV). Running 2 real time AV's is not a good idea IMO, and most security experts (of which I am NOT) would likely agree. Quoting BC's own quietman7 (one of the BEST in the biz): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic407147.html

IMPORTANT NOTE: Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to conflicts that can arise when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously and issues with Windows resource management. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core and using more than one can cause instability, crash your computer, slow performance and waste system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, they both may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior.

Each anti-virus may interpret the activity of the other as suspicious behavior and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a "False Positive". If one finds a virus or a suspicious file and then the other also finds the same, both programs will be competing over exclusive rights on dealing with that virus or suspicious file. Each anti-virus may attempt to remove the offending file and quarantine it at the same time resulting in a resource management issue as to which program gets permission to act first. If one anit-virus finds and quarantines the file before the other one does, then you encounter the problem of both wanting to scan each other's zipped or archived files and each reporting the other's quarantined contents. This can lead to a repetitive cycle of endless alerts that continually warn you that a threat has been found when that is not the case.

Anti-virus scanners use virus definitions to check for malware and these can include a fragment of the virus code which may be recognized by other anti-virus programs as the virus itself. Because of this, many anti-virus vendors encrypt their definitions so that they do not trigger a false alarm when scanned by other security programs. Other vendors do not encrypt their definitions and they can trigger false alarms when detected by the resident anti-virus. Further, dual installation is not always possible because most of the newer anti-virus programs will detect the presence of others and may insist they be removed prior to download and installation of another. If the installation does complete with another anti-virus already installed, you may encounter issues like system freezing, unresponsiveness or similar symptoms while trying to use it.

To avoid these problems, use only one anti-virus solution. Deciding which one to remove is your choice. Be aware that you may lose your subscription to that anti-virus program's virus definitions once you uninstall that software.

Anti-virus vendors recommend that you install and run only one anti-virus program at a time

...and from MSSE's FAQ Microsoft Security Essentials - Installation Checklist and Frequently Asked Questions

Checklist for installing Microsoft Security Essentials

3) Remove ALL real-time anti-malware products that were ever installed on your PC (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, Avast, Avira, ESET, etc.) Uninstall your previous real-time anti-malware. Then, use the removal/cleanup tools in this thread. Not only should you remove your current anti-malware product(s), you should also uninstall any free or trial anti-malware products that may have been installed on your PC when purchased, even if never activated. Some anti-malware products have their own firewall. Removing/uninstalling these products will (or should) enable the Windows Firewall. MSE will use the Windows Firewall by default. After removal and cleanup of all other anti-malware products, restart your PC and check that the Windows Firewall is ON. You can check the status of the Windows Firewall in the Action Center (or Security Center if XP) of your PC, or via the Control Panel.

Common issues that can affect MSE

Most issues with MSE installation and performance can be corrected by following the steps below:

  • Verify that you have removed all other real-time anti-malware products that were ever installed on your PC, including any free/trial products that were installed when the PC was purchased (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, Malwarebytes (paid), etc.). Then, use the cleanup tools here: List of anti-malware program cleanup/uninstall tools
  • If you have installed Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Java, or any other "free" product, you may have been presented with the option to install a "free virus checker", which is selected by default. If you were caught by this, and unknowingly/accidently installed this "free virus checker", uninstall it and use the cleanup tool(s) in the list above. Note that these "free" downloads can also occur in products purchased by you. Your ISP may also provide an anti-malware product (and perhaps a firewall). Install these products ONLY if you do not intend to use MSE and/or the Windows Firewall.
  • Verify that your PC clock is correctly set. If not, correct it.
  • Verify that Windows Defender is disabled (if Windows 7/Vista), or uninstalled (if XP),
  • Verify that you are up-to-date with the latest Service Pack and updates (including .NET). Yes, it can take some time to do this.
  • Verify that the Windows Firewall is on, and set to defaults.
  • Verify that you are using current version of MSE. Open MSE and click on the "down pointer" to the right of "Help". Then, click on "About Security Essentials". Provide this information when asking a question in the MSE Answers Forum.
  • Remove ZoneAlarm firewall if you have it and use the Windows Firewall.
  • Verify that you are not using a proxy server. If you are using a proxy, configure it as per the instructions later in this FAQ.
  • Verify that you have "install updates automatically" selected in Windows Update (even though the MSE definition updates are optional).
  • In Internet Explorer, reset all security zones to default level.

Then, restart your PC.

You may need to remove and reinstall MSE as well.

...You should stop using registry "cleaners" like these from your logs:
iolo technologies' System Mechanic-- uninstalled
Free Window Registry Repair-- installed
Tweaking.com - Windows Repair (All in One)--installed

BC's standard disclaimer regarding the use of registry cleaners:

Posted Image Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

Posted Image Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work. Further, some vendors who offer registry cleaners use deceptive advertisements and claims which are borderline scams. They may alert you to finding thousands of registry errors which can only be fixed and improve performance if you use their product.

Posted Image Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Posted Image Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

Posted Image The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a specific registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

Dunno what this is:
WebReg (Version: 140.0.213.017)--HP product?

I see you uninstalled Spybot S&D, & still have AdAware--I haven't used AdAware in like 6-7 years dunno how effective it is, is it real-time, etc.
