My computer's been running significantly slower than usual; I've done disk cleanup, defrag, and ad-aware and symantec scans, but none have helped thus far. I checked a symantec scan and saw the processes 9129837.exe and hide_evr2.exe, searched online, and found they're supposedly malware, even though I can't seem to locate them in the hijackthis log. I'm not an expert with these things and I have a hard time following the similar threads I've found, so hopefully you guys can help me out.

I checked the Preparation Guide, but the DDS log download link wasn't working for me; I'm posting the hijackthis log below, but I'm perfectly willing to download and run whatever other scans or logs that could help figure this out. I'd appreciate any and all help.

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

1.Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
doing so will only at best cause you unneeded worry as it finds our backups and may even list our tools
and at worst can cause conficts with our tools and lead to unforseen things to happen2.Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
besides the time it takes me to open the reports it makes it harder to find something if I need to go back to do more research and putting them in code boxes just makes them so hard to read3. After each step give me a little feedback
It does not need to be long but just something so I know how things are going it can be something like
I am still getting redirected
The computer is running as it should
Don't put things like - it is the same as before or still the same this just makes me go back and look for you last feedback as to how things are4. read every post completely before doing anything
Pay special attention to the Notes** I have put in
These are things I have found that happen allot and can be taken care of easily just by reading the Notes**

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Backup any files that cannot be replaced

If you have not done it yet spend a few minutes to backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this may save you and me allot of grief later.

You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

you may want to backup the whole harddrive there is some good info in the Preparation Guide on how to make full backups and how to restore it back if something goes wrong. Read the tutorial and print it out so you will know what to do in case the unforeseen happens.

When you have the files backed up you may do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Hey Gringo, ran the DeFogger like you asked, then ran the DDS after rebooting. The .logs are listed below.

As an update, I'm still having some issues with my laptop running more slowly than usual. In addition, I ran into an issue where I couldn't print to a server, kept getting a popup dialogue box about a Pharos client - I don't know all the details about how the printing system is set up, but if you'd like to know more about it I can probably find some info. I'm guessing it's part of the core problem, though.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Sorry for the delay - some things came up that have required my full attention recently, but I should be able to spend a good amount of time on this over the weekend. I'm also having a bit of trouble finding an external hard drive to borrow to back up my files before moving forward.

I should make some progress on Saturday, so I'll post an update then.

Hey Gringo, ran ComboFix from the desktop, the log is pasted below. I disabled Symantec and Ad-aware before running it, but from what I can tell from the log, Windows Defender was still enabled. I'm not sure how to disable it, but hopefully it didn't cause any problems with ComboFix.

I haven't noticed if my laptop has gotten back to its original speed just yet due to some work I had this weekend, but I should be able to check better later tonight. Additionally, after running ComboFix, the icons in the notification area of my toolbar (i.e. the informational icons, bottom-right corner of the screen, where the clock/power/volume is) aren't showing up in the numbers they used to. Right now it only shows the time, volume, power, internet connection, and symantec; before, at the very least, I would see Ad-aware after enabling and opening the program. My guess is that ComboFix cleaned up some of the processes and this isn't technically a problem, but I thought I should note it anyway, just in case. I'll let you know if the icons come back when I test the speed.

Here's the ComboFix log in full:

Been slammed with class presentations over the past couple days; I'll be able to get the next round of logs by the end of the week, if not tomorrow.

As a small update, things are running more smoothly overall, but the start up (from hibernation mode) is taking longer and running more slowly than it has in the past.

Here's the most recent set of logs you requested. As an update, things were going relatively smoothly, though just a couple hours ago my laptop really slowed down; I was running a couple of programs at the same time, but even after closing them all the speed didn't pick back up for several minutes.
