Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me with my problem. I just built a new PC that consists of an Intel i7 920 on a eVGA x58 sli motherboard with 16GB of DDR3 1600mhz ram. It also has a Nvidia GTX550Ti video card in it. Hard disks consist of a 120GB SATA3 SSD with bios configured to be AHCI and a 1TB SATA hard drive.

The computer will crash approx. every 2 days right now. Sometimes it will do it at night while sitting idle and other times in the middle of using an application. There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason. I have also made sure to update all drivers.

I've attached the Windows Debugging tool analysis of the memory dump so that hopefully someone can help me figure out which piece of hardware is causing the problem.

OK, new day

Go to here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
and download the blue screen viewer http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bluescreenview.zip

I copied the BlueScreenView.exe to C:\ just for simplicity.
Then try it this way
Start Orb (Button)
All Programs
Accessories
Right Click on the Command Prompt and select run as administrator
paste in
C:\BlueScreenView.exe /stext bsod.txt

And attach the results to the your reply.

Some other thoughts.
Have you run a memory test? Alternatively have you tried removing 1/2 of the memory and seeing what happens? If it still crashes switch the memory and try.
Are you running the latest drivers from the motherboard makers website and teh video card makers website?

Good Luck
Roger

Thanks for responses guys. I did do a memory test and it did not report any problems. I will try removing half of the memory over night and see what happens.

The link to the blue screen of death viewer did not work. I did use another BSoD viewer and it says that hal.dll and ntoskrnl.dll were involved in all of the crashes.

HI, What brand of 120Gb SSD are you booting off of. SSDs with sandforce controllers (SATA III) seem to be problematic in that regard.
For example I posted this elsewhere here.

Something else to look at, It seems that many SSD drives don't get along with the Marvell SATA III controllers used on many motherboards. If you are try moving the SSD to a Intel based controller. Also try and be sure you are using the latest Intel drivers.

take a look at the user reviews on this page
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227706
Example:

Pros: Fast, when it isn't causing BSODs.

Cons: I installed this drive with a clean install of windows 7, AHCI mode enabled, followed all the instructions I could find on the web to get it working optimally, and used the latest intel RST drivers and firmware. After about a month it started causing BSODs about every ten minutes, but I somehow managed to get it running again by swapping SATA ports and reinstalling RST drivers. It worked for another month or so, but now it's hanging again, with a solid drive light until it BSODs after about 5 minutes. It isn't only a windows problem, because it does the same thing in Ubuntu now. I'm done with OCZ products.

Other Thoughts: Don't purchase this if you need a computer that boots and stays running reliably. I'm lucky I can get by without my desktop, because the frequency with which this drive made it inoperable is astounding.

For comparison, BTW these are what I use. A little more pricey a little bit slower,
Reliable. I just used my 5th one last week.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167052

I gave up a little bit of speed for reliable by using the Intel 320 Series SSDs (5 year warranty) SAT II on a Intel controller. The speed is still amazing compared to a 7200 RPM drive. Also with a SSD drive it is very important to be running the latest firmware. Warning some of them may wipe the drive. I got my 1st one last year around this time when Intel went to a 5 yr. warranty on the 320 series.

+++++++++++

Strange, Both the links work for me. One takes me to the webpage and the second one just opens for download the .zip file.

As for the memory, if I recall the the i7-920 can do single channel , dual channel and triple channel mode.

Why not try single channel mode if you can manage that first.

hamluis's link is pointing towards a hardware problem. The trick is which one.

You seem to be indicating it always crashes on day two?
Good Luck
Roger

The link to the blue screen of death viewer did not work.

Please zip up the minidumps and attach the resultant zip file to your next reply so I can have a look at them for you:
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
  • Click on the first minidump file to select it.
  • Hold down the <Shift> key, and click on the last minidump file to select all of the files.
  • Release the <Shift> key.
  • Now, right-click on any one of the selected files > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The zip file will be located in the same place (the Minidump folder).
  • Attach the zip file to your next reply.
When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.

Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.
  • It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click Go.
When the scan is finished, a text file will open in a Notepad window.
  • Copy the entire contents of the Notepad window, and paste in your reply.
(Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.)

Hi, You said

It is an OCZ brand SSD.

OCZ support forums http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/content.php
OCZ firmware http://www.ocztechnology.com/ssd_tools/

You might head over to Newegg.com and look at user reviews of your particular model and see if it is one of the OCZ SSDs that have caused BSODs for others.

Make sure it has the latest firmware as the older firmware has been known to cause stability issues on their SATA III SSDs. On yours as of today the latest version firmware is 2.15

Good Luck
Roger

The problem may well turn out to be due to using a Marvel controller/SSD combination. However, even with the latest firmware and drivers for both the Marvel controller and the SSD, there is no way of ruling this out ... apart from removing the SSD from the system and using a conventional HDD with Windows installed on that. I suggest that we attempt to rule out some other possibilities first, and if the problem persists after that, test with a fresh installation of Windows on a conventional HDD as a last resort after removing the SSD from the system.

I have only started debugging the minidumps but have noticed some other possibilities exist ...
:step1: I see old drivers being used for a couple of wireless network devices:

jswpslwfx.sys Thu May 15 20:28:50 2008 ... D-Link USB Wireless Adapter Driver
scmndisp.sys Wed Jan 17 18:48:03 2007 ... Netgear Neutral Wireless Solution

These could be causing the STOP 124 (hardware) error? I can't figure out where (or what) the D-Link device (& driver) fits into the scheme of things.

Running Driver Verifier might identify a problem driver (device)?

You are up against it as far as a successful resolution goes with the existing hardware ... but we can keep looking for the culprit (or culprits ... plural) and attempt to rule out everything possible with the exception of the Marvel/SSD combination. There seems to be plenty of scope for more than one issue here?

Driver Verifier instructions

Run Driver Verifier following the instructions DRIVER VERIFIER - Windows 7 & Vista ... by jcgriff2
  • Notes:
  • Do not omit the first step, to create a System Restore point before enabling Driver Verifier.
  • Read the instructions on how to check the Driver Verifier Status.
  • Read the instructions on how To Turn Driver Verifier OFF when you have finished with it.
  • Read the instructions (and record them on paper so you have them if needed) about what to do IF you cannot start the system normally after it crashes under Driver Verifier.
  • Run Driver Verifier for 36 hours unless the system crashes. It doesn't matter whether you are using the computer or not during that time.
If your system BSOD’s under the Driver Verifier:
  • Locate the minidump file:
    • C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
  • Zip up the most recent minidump file:

I am unsure about these two drivers as well. I don't have a D-Link USB adapter on this PC. And as far as the Netgear goes, I had installed the latest driver for the Netgear WNA1100 USB adapter I have connected.

  • scmndisp.sys Wed Jan 17 18:48:03 2007 ... Netgear Neutral Wireless Solution

I'm going to try and update the Netgear driver and uninstall the D-Link.

I will also run the driver verifier and post results once complete.

Alright, here's a minidump after running verifier. It only took about 20 minutes to get a BSOD.

Driver Verifier has flagged a ZoneAlarm component driver.

ISWKL.sys ........... CheckPoint ZoneAlarm ForceField Browser Security

:step1: Un-install ZoneAlarm.
  • Re-start the system.
:step2: Ensure that the Windows firewall is enabled!

:step3: Run DV again.
