PROBLEM: Yesterday, 3/18/12 around mid-morning or early afternoon, my Toshiba wireless laptop computer lost internet connection from my HP desktop computer network. Verizon is my ISP. The wireless router seems fine and is providing internet service to the desktop, but not to the laptop. Windows Network Diagnostics is saying that "The default gateway is not available." I've tried everything the Troubleshooting applications said to do. The internet access icon says that the laptop is "Currently Connected to: "Unidentified Network. No Internet Access." The Wireless Network Connection says: "LHX40" is "CONNECTED" with "Signal Strength: Excellent" "Security Type: WEP" "Radio Type: 802.11g" and "SSID: LHX40"

The problem is beyond my ability to troubleshoot it and I don't know whether to contact Verizon, Windows, or Microsoft for Tech Support. Bleeping Computer.com has helped me clean up several viruses i the past. I'm a little leary of all the programs you asked me to run, since I kept getting messages that they were dangerous, but I did as you requested and the results are pasted below. I hope they enlighten you. Or, maybe you can refer me to Verizon, Windows, or Microsoft depending on who could help me. I'm ready to throw this desktop computer and the Toshiba laptop out into the street where my husband can run over them multiple times. Everything was running find yesterday in the morning and then this "Unidentified network" business popped up. I'm not sure how you respond to me, but my email address is jbates98@live.com - thank you for whatever you can do to help me.

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Your settings seem to be correct, ping works but DNS is timing out.

First of all you're running two AV programs, which may have something to do with your issue:
McAfee Total Protection
Norton Internet Security

You must uninstall one of them.
If McAfee use this tool: http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html
If Norton use this tool: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20080710133834EN&lg=english&ct=united+states&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home&entsrc=redirect_pubweb
Also since both programs include a firewall make sure Windows firewall is turned OFF (right now it's on).

Update me on your issues after performing the above.

Also.....does the wired connection work?

OK, that sneaky Norton was hiding from me. I didn't know it was still installed, but has now been removed. Windows firewall is off, but I just turned it on AFTER I experienced the current problem. My desktop computer is connected to the wireless router (Verizon) and I'm not sure what you mean by "does the wired connection work?" Perhaps you want me to bypass the router and plug the internet cable from the desktop computer (internal modem) directly into the laptop (or do I connect the blue cable from the router into the laptop?) I will send this email now and then try both ways to see if it makes any difference. If I do that, it will most likely disconnect this computer from the internet, but I'll come back and let you know. Thank you for your help.

Yes, use ethernet cable to connect laptop to the router.

I tried the ethernet cable from my desktop computer and still got the same message. A few minutes ago, I went to my office and plugged into their network cable. I do this all the time and never have a problem. Tonight, I plugged into their internet cable and normally that would have made the internet available to me without me doing anything. I just plug the cable into my computer and the internet works. Well, tonight, I plugged my laptop into their internet and to the same message "The gateway is unavailable"

I'm back home at the message on my internet icon says " Unidentified Network" "No internet access" BUT sometimes that icon says "Network LHX40" (which is correct) but still says no internet access. When I click on that icon, it opens the window that has all of the available networks around me with the bars showing power. These are from my neighbors. Except the first one on the list says "LHX40 CONNECTED" with full power bars, but at the top of that box it says "Currently Connected to: Unidentified network No internet access."

So, my laptop says that it is connected to LHX40 with full strentgh, but I'm not connected.

Since I get the same error message from home (Verizon) and at work (also Verizon) then it has to be something wrong with my settings. I don't know what to try next.

Make sure, your settings are correct.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Make sure Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS server address Automatically are checked.
7. Click on "Advanced" button and make sure "IP Settings" tab looks like this:
Posted Image
Make sure "DNS" tab looks like this:
Posted Image
Make sure "WINS" tab looks like this:
Posted Image
8. Still in Control Panel double click on "Internet options" then "Connections" tab then "LAN Settings" button. Make sure "Automatically detect settings" is checked.
If you made any changes OK your way out.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista and 7), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.
