I have a new (fresh out of the box) HP v75 monitor that emits a high pitched squeal. I called HP customer support and they said i needed a software update and wanted to charge me for it. I said 'no thanks'. What's causing this squeal and how can i stop it?

The monitor is connected to an HP Pavilion a1600n, running XP Pro with SP 3 installed.

If it is new out of the box, take it back
If it is new out of the box they should support it free of charge under warranty.

The only thing I can think of that would be squealing in a high pitch is the high voltage transformer. It shouldn't do that of course.
