Hello!

Been lurking awhile, and am ashamed to admit that I signed up to post that my laptop got hit with the Scour virus.

I'd run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, which found some issues and cleaned them. However, my Symantec Endpoint keeps pinging me finding a Bloodhound.Exploit.346 that continually tries to run (Symantec quarantines it). I too get the redirects on occasion.

I could use any advice you might offer. I should add that I'm running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion. I can post far more info, though.

Much obliged,
- Rob

That infection report jives with the directory that Symantec tells me it's quarantining. On a side note, I noticed when Symantec quarantines the virus, my thumb drive lights up. I've left the thumb drive plugged in during this whole process so Anti-Malware and Symantec have visibility on it and can scan it. . . anything I should worry about, or would it all be in the *.dll file on my User directory?

Thank you!
Rob

We have couple of issues there.

1.

File: C:\Users\Oswald\AppData\Local\dplayx.dll **INFECTED** Win32:Hosts-BD [Trj]

dplayx.dll is a legit file name but in incorrect location. It should be located in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.
You can safely delete the above file.
You may need to do it in safe mode.
Let me know if you encountered any problems with deleting.

2. Your "hosts" file has been hijacked.
Please, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#FixItForMeAlways and click on "Fix it" button to reset your "hosts" file.
Follow all prompts.

*********************

Re-run MiniToolbox.
Checkmark following boxes:
  • List content of Hosts
Click Go and post the result.

Went through 'Command' to the DOS prompt to delete dplayx.dll (I'm an old DOS hound, sue me. ) The only issue is when I did a 'dir' to find the file, it could not be found in that directory. Did a "del *.*" in that particular root directory, and it seemed to have deleted all of the singular, discrete files there. Went back in through Explorer, and did a search for *.dll through that directory and its subs, and I didn't see it. Probably a 'scorched earth' way to go about it, but I'll take what I can get at this point. :)

Am rebooting the computer out of Safe Mode to run the Host Fix.

Thanks again!!
Rob

So, this is strange. . . I don't see any *.dll files in C:\users\Oswald\AppData\Local . . . just a bunch of subdirectories. Even in DOS.

Yeah, you can't see that file because it's hidden and marked as system file.

Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders, UN-check Hide protected operating system files.
Press F5 to refresh the view and you should be able to see the offending file.
NOTE. Make sure to reverse the above changes, when done with this step.

Disregard the mid-scan save; I thought it had locked up again on me so I wanted to save it before the laptop restarted on me again. (That happened occasionally).
