Followed your directions/tutorials and F8 would not work so I used msconfig. That does not work - just black screen, no programs. So I thought, why not set it back a day? What can that hurt? Well, now I can get to my desktop - I'm not sure if I'm in safe mode still since I set it back. A couple files are missing from my desktop that were there yesterday. But this does not get rid of the Trojan, does it?
Any suggestions on what to try next?
Many thanks,

JD

Hadn't received any responses so I - perhaps mistakenly - ran malwarebytes which hasn't found anything. Probably because I went back one day. Have I made this worse? I have an old-school back-up drive which should be working fine but it's been a couple months since I've backed up. Should I send my files to a cloud service? Would they be infected in the cloud? If not, can anyone recommend a site? Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Before I suggest anything please post this log for my review.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post.

Proceeded per your instructions.... DDS got to about 2/3 complete and then froze. I had to shut down the computer to get back on. I think my scripts were disabled - perhaps I'm doing that incorrectly? Will try on mozilla.

Remove the proxy settings.

In Internet Explorer go to Tools - Internet Options - Connections Tab - Lan Settings and remove the reference to 127.0.0.1:5555 if found, then uncheck "Use a proxy server" and check "Automatically detect settings".
===

If you use Firefox in Tools Menu > Options... > Advanced Tab > Network Tab > Connection > Settings. Select the Auto-detect proxy settings for this network option. Or no proxy if you do not need it.
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
===

Please post the log and let me know what problem persists.

Thank you Nasdaq.
I ran ComboFix.
Installed/agreed to the Recovery Console.
Said it was scanning for malware and could take up to 10 minutes or longer. Within a couple minutes the screen went black and everything shut down and computer restarted. No log. Did a search to look for log and the computer won't search.
Am hesitant to run ComboFix again without checking with you first.
I fear I have a hot mess on my hands....

Did a quick check and it looks like I can access my programs but my files are still hidden - documents, pictures, etc.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

ClearJavaCache::

Save this as CFScript on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Third party programs if not up to date can be an open door for an infection

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Try this to make your files visible again, please download the following program to your desktop:

Unhide.exe

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

This may take sometime, please let if finish.

Post the logs and let me know what problem persists.

My stuff is back!!!!!! You're a genius. Is there anything else I should do? I know I need to update Java, Firefox, turn my firewall back on, install AVG (is there another anti-virus program you would recommend?) and backup frequently.
Thank you!!!!

My stuff is back!!!!!! You're a genius. Is there anything else I should do? I know I need to update Java, Firefox, turn my firewall back on, install AVG (is there another anti-virus program you would recommend?) and backup frequently.

Glad we could help.

AVG is good. Keep it up to date that the most important thing.

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Check your present version and update as recommended.

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.
