I just posted my HJackThis log. Thanks for any help you can give.

The upshot of all of this is that all of a sudden, while performing a complete system scan, Avast found the following:

c:\System Volume Information\catalog.wci\00000002.ps2
Infection: win32:Crypt-LUQ [trj]
Severity: High

Avast's boot-time scan found nothing
MalwareBytes found nothing.

Avast had me run aswMBR then OTL. I uploaded both logs which, to them, were clean thus their conclusion that it was a false-positive. I will gladly provide these logs if you want them.

The final reply to my post mentioned ComboFix which I will not run until I hear back from you.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

1.Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
doing so will only at best cause you unneeded worry as it finds our backups and may even list our tools
and at worst can cause conficts with our tools and lead to unforseen things to happen2.Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
besides the time it takes me to open the reports it makes it harder to find something if I need to go back to do more research and putting them in code boxes just makes them so hard to read3. After each step give me a little feedback
It does not need to be long but just something so I know how things are going it can be something like
I am still getting redirected
The computer is running as it should
Don't put things like - it is the same as before or still the same this just makes me go back and look for you last feedback as to how things are4. read every post completely before doing anything
Pay special attention to the Notes** I have put in
These are things I have found that happen allot and can be taken care of easily just by reading the Notes**

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Backup The Computer!!

If you have not done it yet spend a few minutes to backup the computer. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this may save you and me allot of grief later.

There is some good info in the Preparation Guide on how to make full backups and how to restore it back if something goes wrong. Read the tutorial and print it out so you will know what to do in case the unforeseen happens.

When you have the computer backed up you may do the following.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

  • .logs from DDS
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

I tried to get "dds.pif" from the link that you provided but when I clicked on the "dds.pif" link at http://www.infospyware.com/utiles/dds/ nothing happened. It may have downloaded or executed without my knowledge. ???

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

I am using a different computer for this post.

I disabled Avast and ran ComboFix.

It wanted to install Recovery Console which it did successfully.

ComboFix displayed a message that AVG 2012 Free Edition was running and that it needed to be disabled. I removed AVG months ago and replaced it with Avast. I have run Microsoft disk cleaner and CCleaner several times in that period. CCleaner cleaned both application and registry entries. AVG was not listed as an application or in the registry hence my surprise when ComboFix indicated that AVG was running. This message appeared more than once. Another message from ComboFix appeared asking me to confirm closing Quick Assist which I think is associated with my Logitech webcam. This appeared more than once.

ComboFix went through more than 40 stages and rebooted my computer. When it came back up, a ComboFix text box appeared with the message:
Preparing Log Report.
Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished.

This text box has been sitting with no further action and there is no disk activity. There is no log to upload at this point. I have not done anything further.

I will await your next instructions before doing anything.

Thanks.

One more thing. I saw no processes running that I could identify as belonging to AVG. Hopefully I did everything I was instructed to do correctly. Thanks.

Yet another thing. After rebooting and the ComboFix text box appeared, my Skype login screen appeared which it always does when my computer boots. That's it.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that ComboFix detected both Avast and AVG real time scanners were running. I couldn't find any processes for either antivirus software in Task Manager. Under Services, Avast was stopped and there was no listing for AVG. So, there was nothing to stop, disable or otherwise remove from what ComboFix said was running. After ComboFix ran, there was no reboot. Only a message confirming that I was in Safe Mode.
