browser won't load/shut down properly /crashes

hi, Bleepingcomputers , i would appreciate any help and advice as to what is going on with my computer and what i can do about it as i am pretty clueless. I run windows 7 and was using Google chrome. A short while ago Google started to run really slow when accessing sites and saying the pages were unresponsive with the option to kill the page or wait , the page would eventually load after clicking wait maybe 4 or 5 times.Also it would say that google chrome had been unable to shut down properly after sessions. Thinking it was maybe a problem with the browser i un-installed chrome and then re-installed it, the problem continued and got worse and google started crashing. I have Norton security and this detected nothing , so i downloaded Avast and ran a scan but this also showed up nothing. I have tried to do a system restore and keep getting the message 'corruption on windows c disk' , but when trying to fix this am told it can't be fixed whilst it is in use and schedule to fix when restaring the computer , this i did several times but it still said it was corrupt and couldn't run a system restore.
I downloadied and am currently using fire fox , which seemed fine to start with but also seems to be starting to load really slowly, though I am not getting 'page unresponsive ' messages. also yesterday Avast said it had detected a 'rootkit' and to run a scan and restart to get rid of it , which i did and think it may of , but not sure ..Thanks in advance for any help offered :)

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log

  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

Very well.
I don't see anything malicious there but your kind of problems can be caused by running multiple AV programs.

How are things now?

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Hiya, I think things seem ok just now. I only had 2 AV programs since after the computer started doing strange things. initialy i just had Norton but downloaded Avast to see if it found something Norton missed.I didn't know you can't run 2 though.
will run the other scan and post results
