Greetings! I've just had 4 days of sheer hell with a new laptop i picked up. I'm not sure if it came to me infected but all that is unimportant now. The first things i started noticing was an increased usage on my 3 dongle (i'm a Pay Per Go customer so this worried me deeply). I'm quite computer savvy and have never had a virus or slightest hint of malware in over 7 years due to a healthy knowledge.
When my computer started to browse away to searchbif i knew i had a serious problem ie one that ccleaner and spybot had not picked up on and it was around this time i also noticed teatimer was being disabled on startup. I did some googling and found ComboFix (i already knew about smitfraud and hijackthis) and immediately recognised key parts of my problem being fixed by this tool. I read your instructions before i read your advice though and i have, as a result, attempted to fix the problem myself. For this I apologise.

I began with smitfraud because i couldn't download combofix from anywhere and was having the "out of date" version issue when i finally managed it through cnet. So yes, smitfraud fixed a few things but not everything (i could still see files replicating in %temp% and to the registry). I then tried HiJack this and removed a duplicate java entry and a BHO which allowed me to download combofix finally. Sure enough on running combifix it found the files i was seeing replicated in hijackthis and removed them but kept going BSOD during the log creation at the end. This i found to be because one file was still trying to replicate itself or at least trying to alter a registry key marked by combofix for deletion so i disregarded (on my own authority!) the advice not to interfere with combofix. I booted into safemode through F8 once combofix had solved the replicating files problem and sure enough it found another file on startup and killed it. I am hoping my laptop is now clean, and really that's why I'm here.

I've come to beg really, that despite my not following instructions properly, maybe someone could spare some time to have a look at my final combofix log? Thank-you, in advance, i'll understand if help is unavailable due to me taking steps myself.

I sincerely apologise, the whole mess is back again. I failed. What I will do is follow your instructions to the letter, get you everything you need and reply back with the correct logs. Please don't waste your time replying to this post, i feel i've created enough of a problem here without needlessly taking up time which could be given to folk who've done as requested. Again, sorry.

Ok folks, this is what i think you need from me. I'm very sorry for my unorthodoxy but i can't seem to figure out how to remove my previous posts. Any help would still be greatly appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

1.Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
doing so will only at best cause you unneeded worry as it finds our backups and may even list our tools
and at worst can cause conficts with our tools and lead to unforseen things to happen2.Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
besides the time it takes me to open the reports it makes it harder to find something if I need to go back to do more research and putting them in code boxes just makes them so hard to read3. After each step give me a little feedback
It does not need to be long but just something so I know how things are going it can be something like
I am still getting redirected
The computer is running as it should
Don't put things like - it is the same as before or still the same this just makes me go back and look for you last feedback as to how things are4. read every post completely before doing anything
Pay special attention to the Notes** I have put in
These are things I have found that happen allot and can be taken care of easily just by reading the Notes**

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Backup The Computer!!

If you have not done it yet spend a few minutes to backup the computer. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this may save you and me allot of grief later.

There is some good info in the Preparation Guide on how to make full backups and how to restore it back if something goes wrong. Read the tutorial and print it out so you will know what to do in case the unforeseen happens.

When you have the computer backed up you may do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?
