Did you have a particular portable in mind?

ClamWin Free Antivirus is useful if you want portable on a USB or Removable Drive, however, it does not include an on-access real-time scanner which means you need to manually scan a file in order to detect any malware.

IMO, not having an anti-virus working in real-time in the background defeats much of its intended purpose to protect a computer. What is your objection to using a free anti-virus?

Thanks for the reply...I have had so much bad luck with several av's is the reason I was considering dumping real time..but youre right..I need the real time...I was told I can use Zone Alarm with Malwarebytes Pro and no av..

Please see Choosing an Anti-Virus Program.

After reading that, scroll down and read Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware Tools.
