Hi,
Can anyone help?
1. Background:
I was on hxxttp://www.aljazeera.com/ this morning. I clicked on an article & was suddenly redirected to another page. A pop-up box appeared asking me to run/execute a program. I didn't allow it to run & immediately closed down my browser. However it looks like something has still managed to infect my computer. I now experience the following:
• When I surf the web, some google ads appear blank with the message: '404 Not Found nginx'
• I sometimes get redirected to websites such as 'easy a-z.com'
2. Attempted Solutions:
• I've run malwarebytes & superantispyware but the problem continues;
• I've tried running hijackthis but get the following message: "For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file ... you need to edit the file yourself ... run and type: notepad C:\Windows\System3d\drivers\etc\hosts"
• So when I subsequently choose Run & type the above, the Hosts file contains the following lines of text at the bottom: "149.5.18.172 www.google-analytics.com. 149.5.18.172 ad-emea.doubleclick.net. 149.5.18.172 www.statcounter.com. 108.163.215.51 www.google-analytics.com. 108.163.215.51 ad-emea.doubleclick.net. 108.163.215.51 www.statcounter.com."
• I've reset the Hosts file but with mixed results: in Windows Explorer, under C:\Windows\System3d\drivers\etc\hosts, I've reset the Hosts file both manually & by using Microsoft's 'Fix it' tool (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034). I've rebooted the computer several times & the Hosts file located at C:\Windows\System3d\drivers\etc\hosts no longer displays the above lines of text. However, when I click Start, Run & type "notepad C:\Windows\System3d\drivers\etc\hosts", the resulting Hosts file that opens still has the above text: "149.5.18.172 www.google-analytics.com. ... 108.163.215.51 www.statcounter.com." I thought there might be another 64-bit Hosts file under C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers - but there's nothing there?

My computer system: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor, 8Gb RAM, NIVIDIA GeForce 210.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi Myrti,

Thanks for all your help. It's looking good so far. The problem seems to have gone away. However, I'll continue to monitor things over the next 24-48 hours just to make sure & then report back.

Thanks so much again,

Tim.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

Hi,

you're most welcome. :) Before wrapping things up here, there's one more thing I'd like you to do to help avoid future infections:
Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u1-windows-i586-s.exe (or jre-7u1-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.
