Hello Bleeping Computer,

I am having a problem with my computer.

Running Windows Vista home basic edition, When i start up the computer I get an error saying windows module installer has stopped working.

So far I have searched and tried several fixes.

I checked the hardrive for errors. This took 3 hours and repaired alot of cluster files.

I uninstalled AVG2012 as it would not scan the computer.

I tried to update windows from the control panel and get error 80080005

Since the hardrive was checked for errors, the computer is back working ok, but I cannot update windows and have trouble installing any new programs.

Can anyone advise what to do to try and fix the machine.

Thanks

Kevin

Try installing Avast Free http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
or
Microsoft Security essentials from http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

You really do not want to run with no Antivirus.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

Since I last posted I re-installed AVG 2012 and the computer seems to be working again.

If i get the errors again I will try one of the other 2 anti-virus you mentioned.

thanks

Hello.

Since i last posted the Laptop has been working half and half.

I have updated AVG and things ran ok for a day.

Now anytime I use firefox, the Cpu spikes up to 100% every 5 seconds. So its like every 5 seconds my laptop freezes for a few seconds than the cpu drops.

This goes on in a loop all the time. Very frustrating trying to type anything.

I have tried disabling any add ons with firefox. Nothing changed.

I ran 2 or 3 scans with AVG and anti-malaware.

Can anyone help.

thanks

I had a read of this.

I tried to follow the steps.

MEthod 1 is ok but alot of DLL missing in method 2.

The module warning has stopped popping up.

The cpu still spikes every 5-10 seconds to a 100% and freezes the pc.

I ran spybot search and destroy. ANti malaware and AVG.

Removed some spyware but problem still exists.

ANy Ideas, ??
thanks

You may have a malware problem...I'll move this to the appropriate forum where the more knowledgeable can either confirm/refute my guess.

Hello kevob.
Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

>>>>

Please download TDSSKiller.zip and and extract it.
  • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
  • Click Start scan.
  • When it is finished the utility outputs a list of detected objects with description.
The utility automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects.
The utility prompts the user to select an action to apply to suspicious objects (Skip, by default). Let the options as it is and click Continue
  • Let reboot if needed and tell me if the tool needed a reboot.
  • Click on Report and post the contents of the text file that will open.

Note: By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder. The Log has a name like: TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to these instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to redownload TDSSKiller and randomly rename it before downloading and saving to the computer.

You still may have a Kryptic infection.
Let's do TDSS differently.
.
  • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
  • Click on Change Parameters
  • Put a check in the box of Detect TDLFS file system
  • Click Start scan.
  • When it is finished the utility outputs a list of detected objects with description.
The utility automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects.
The utility prompts the user to select an action to apply to suspicious objects (Skip, by default). Let the options as it is and click Continue
  • Let reboot if needed and tell me if the tool needed a reboot.
  • Click on Report and post the contents of the text file that will open.

Note: By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder. The Log have a name like: TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

You have too many Reg cleaners, actually one is to many. They cause more harm than good. The non Reg side of CCleaner is OK so you can keep that. While you are in the Add/Remove remove any Toolbars.
Reboot

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe (or jre-7u3-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Similarly Update to Adobe Reader X (10.1.0)
Note UN check the box so you do not install the toolbar, unless you really want it..

Free! Google Toolbar search Google from any web page, block pop-ups

Yes, install Google Toolbar - optional

Hello,

Thanks for all your help.

It is running very well. Yesterday I installed AVast antivirus and google chrome,

I think avast slows it down a bit so will try the one you sent.

thanks again.
