Hey guys,

Idiot that I am I clicked on a link my buddy sent me in MSN - the "Hey is this you?" followed by a link that had my MSN address in it. Normally I dodge these but I clicked this one since I was MSN'ing with him and it wasn't a message out of the blue. Some windows popped up asking my permission to run something and I stupidly clicked yes. I just wasn't thinking. :thumbsup:

So what's it done that I noticed: it's deleted my Zone Alarm, and it closes AVG Anti-Virus and Hijack This programs within a second or two after I open them. I managed to run a system scan in HJT, and found that it did create a text log. The virus would close the log as soon as I opened it, but renaming the log seemed to solve that problem. So I was able to get the HJT log, which is below:

Oh one other thing. A windows window popped up telling me settings have been changed which render some programs unsuable (or something along those lines) then a permission window from ZA asked me if I wished to allow csrss to access the net, which I denied.

Please help.

Hello and welcome to the site.. Please track this Topic and reply to it in timely manners - might take couple steps to clean this entirely. :thumbsup:

Please download MsnVirRem (Either zip or self extracting .exe), and save it to your desktop. Once in place, right click the zip file (or double click the exe), and extract the files to your desktop. It will create another folder called MsnVirRem DO NOT RUN ANYTHING IN IT YET

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

(In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.)

In the new MsnVirRem folder, that you should have on your desktop, double click MsnVir.bat and let it run its course. A DOS window should pop up, Let it run until it disappears. It will take time to scan your machine.
After it disappears, reboot back into normal mode, and post a fresh HijackThis Log.
Hi there, stranger!

Ok, your log is clean, but these are strongly suggested to take out:

Go to -> Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following entries if present:

Coral Eurobet Poker
Bet Hold'em Poker
MultiPoker
MultiPoker
UltimateBet
PartyPoker
Bodog Poker
Royal Vegas Poker

Then run a scan with HijackThis and check and fix these entries:

Ah alright, if THAT'S the case.. :thumbsup:

Let's clear out your restore points now.

Disable System Restore;

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check the "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply. An message shows up.
6. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Confirm with "Ok".

Reboot.

Enable System Restore;

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click "OK".

Be sure to set a new restore point.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
  • EULAlyzer by Javacool <= No need to read End user license agreements when installing software--

    # Discover potentially hidden behavior about the software you're going to install
    # Pick up on things you missed when reading license agreements
    # Keep a saved database of the license agreements you view
    # Instant results - super-fast analysis in just a second
And also see TonyKlein's good advice;
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My favourite)

Ok done! Thank you so very much for the help!

I had AVG, ad-aware, and Zone Labs set up on my computer, but the biggest preventative step I can take to prevent viruses and spyware is NOT BEING AN IDIOT!

Thanks again!
