The wife was looking something up on the desktop on Saturday afternoon and somehow launched a nice application of the System Check malware on the home desktop. I'm posting from the uninfected laptop.

The only way I can get to anything on the desktop is by launching in safe mode - other than that we have a black screen with a bunch of boxes saying "Failed to save all of the components for the file \\System32\\0000xxxx. The file is corrupted or unreadable. This error may be caused by a PC hardware problem."

I've attempted to run Malwarebytes anti-malware with no success. I tried running the latest Microsoft anti-malware scan but it did a complete scan with no results.

I need a complete step by step guide on how to rid the computer of this pest please.

Hello and welcome, here are the steps...

This infection family will also hide all the files on your computer from being seen. To make your files visible again, please download the following program to your desktop:

Unhide.exe

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

Please follow our Removal Guide here Remove System Check .
After reading how the malware is misleading you ...
You will move to the Automated Removal Instructions

After you completed that, post your scan log here, let me know how things are.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

Also the other tool log.. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
