I need help to open up ip and or ports on my router and possible in windows 7 in order to play an old Dynmax Game called Starsige. This is my first computer upgrade in over 8 years. The last computer I had ran with the Windows XP operating system and I did not have any problems running the game on that old system.

However, after installing the game on my new computer with all the applicable patches, work-around files etc. when launching into multiplayer mode, it cannot locate/find the servers in order to play multiplayer. I was told that I needed to open the ports on my router and possibly windows in order for it tow work.

I have tried to follow the cisco/linksys website step by step procedures to open up these ports, but the information does not save. I even tried to watch a few youtube videos on how to do it, still no luck. Hence, the reason why I am here now :) Additionally, when I looked on all the various pages or screens within the applications/gaming tab within the router software, for example, single port forwarding, port range forwarding etc, there is absolutely no information in there whatsoever.

I have attempted to turn off win7 firewall; I tried turning on game mode on my free version of zonealarm; turned off free version of spyware blaster antivirus program, and that too didn't work. So, I think it must be a network router issue. Any help offered would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Below is the Result from the MiniToolBox Scan!

Do you have the port numbers or port number range that need to be opened and forwarded.

Yes,

I believe they are 29000 through 29005.

I may need to take a couple screen shots of some of my router software pages. As I mentioned before, there really isn't any information at all on any of the pages under the applications/games tab of when I log onto the menu shell for the router. It seems like there should be some information in there. I also have 3 computer's connected into the router, but I cannot seem to view any of them.

First you may need to update the firmware of the router. When you log into the router using a web browser look at the top right of the screen it should say FIRMWARE followed by a number if its anything less then Ver.2.0.03 Build 9 you need to update and this is why the setup manual does not reflect what you are seeing on the screen. Second your computer is set to DHCP it needs to be assigned a static IP address for port forwarding. For port triggering you can leave your IP set to dhcp. After entering the port range and IP address you must put a check mark in the enable box THEN click save if you do not mark the box the router will not save the entry,

I believe I updated the firmware to the latest version. However, I need help on how to change from DHCP to assigned static IP address for port forwarding.

I'll catch up with you tomorrow, as it is now very late and have to go to work tomorrow.

Thanks for the help so far, and will log on tomorrow after work to follow up with the new instructions.

To set a static IP address:
  • Open Windows Start menu.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections.
  • Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
  • Click Properties.
This opens the Local Area Connections Properties window.
  • In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and click Properties.
  • In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. 192.168.1.101
    - Subnet mask. 255.255.255.0
    - Default gateway. 192.168.1.1.
  • In Use the following DNS server addresses, 68.105.28.11
When you set up port forwarding use that address as the IP address. You also want to reserve that IP in your router by going to DHCP reservation tab and putting a check mark next to that ip address and click add clients..

Don't forget to enable the port forwarding by putting a check mark in the enable box then clicking save

You will need to follow the directions above to set a static IP for your desktop or you need to configure it inside the router.

Look under your LAN settings and you should be able to assign/reserve an IP for a specific MAC address. All these home wireless routers do a pretty good job at labeling things so it's easy for a novice to understand. You will need to setup your computer to maintain a static IP through the router or by setting it yourself.

You will then need to set the firewall settings to forward the ports to that specific IP that you assigned to your desktop.

Another option would be to add your computer to the DMZ which is a "demilitarized zone", basically meaning that computer will be exposed to the internet and any firewall settings you will have to configure on your computer itself. This will require a static IP as well but it's an easy way to test to make sure the firewall is not causing issues for you.

I would also try disabling the firewall on the router to see what happens.

I think I may have a client with one of those routers i can login to and look around for you...let us know if you still have problems after trying the above suggestions.

Alright,

Just got home. I am waiting to hear back from someone who actually is able to play the game I mentioned above on Windows 7. I should hear back from him very shortly. So, I want to put a hold on this for a day or two to find out if this is something actually worth doing with regards to changing the router and windows IP configuration to static etc. This may also be an issue of an old program and its ancient compatability with Windows 7 as well, in which case, I may need to move this topic to another forum. I'll post back as soon as I hear back from my friend.

Thanks.

I think I have found what you need:

It can run with some tweaking per that forum.

Ok,

I think I got it figured out. I have reconsidered that I really don't want to actually host a game server which would involve changing both the router firmware and Windows 7 firewall configurations. However, I have written down your aforementioned instructions in the event I do decide to host a gaming server in the future if I get another machine. So, I think I am going to simply stick with occasionally jumping into the actual multiplayer game from time to time instead.

Tripflex, thanks for the linkage! I will definitely check it out. I almost have it figured out, just need to get the crash bug fixed when I get home tonight. I think I found a place where to get it at another clan/squad site too.

Please go ahead and close this ticket. And, thank you SneakyCyber and Triplex for all your helps. You people are awesome!
