Hello and good day,

Sent here after exhausting help on the Am I Infected Forum, please see: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic444392.html

Original thread Residual OS issues after removal of System Restore virus No DCHP, IPSEC, TCP/IP netBios, DVD, Keyboard

In a nutshell, I thought we may have kicked that System Restore bugger to the curb since we made great strides towards restoring lost functionality. Unfortunately after the Repair with IE browsing again, I reinstalled some drivers and the Windows Updates and, upon reboot, lost IE browsing again (FF still ok this time), and a new MBAM scan confirmed RootKit.0Access.H is still resident.

At this time I would certainly welcome any help from the good folks here.

Will post GMER log when finished scanning.

thnx

Update:

I was able to install xp sp3 in Safe Mode, however, on reboot I rec'd a blue screen flash.

Went back into Safe Mode, ran msconfig, disabled all non-Microsoft services.

Rebooted into Normal Mode, successfully logged into Windows.

I still have a bunch of services killed, including those allowing IE and installs.

Removed IE and tried to reinstall IE8 for Uncle Softie's pre-install check, but it will not allow re-install.

Killed unnecessary BHO's with HiJack This.

Now trying to re-install xp sp3 in Normal Mode.

[edit] successful xp sp3 re-install, no errors. Successful IE8 re-install, no malicious software found.

Next on the To-Do List from the DDS attach: The World Wide Web Publishing service depends on the IIS Admin service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Update:

Good day,

Since my prior post an IT friend look at the sick laptop.

About (4) hrs and more that a few "ok, this is getting personal"'s later, he claimed victory.

I have since run an Auslogics Disc Defrag and Optimization, and added ZoneAlarm's firewall.

The afflicted laptop does appear to be running well, but I am not prepared to called it clean without a proper Bleeping Blessing!

I ran the DDS and GMER scans again and have attached the results.

thnx again for your time

Update:

Since my last post I have re-installed MS Security Essentials and ran full scan, which identified the following objects:

Trojan:Win32/Alureon.FA
Trojan:Win64/Alureon.gen!I
Trojan:Win32/Alureon.gen!G
Trojan:WinNT/Alureon.AA
Trojan:Win32/Alureon.EN

TrojanDownloader:Java/OpenConnection.PH
TrojanDownloader:Java/OpenConnection.PI
TrojanDownloader:Java/OpenConnection.PK
Exploit:Java/CVE-2011-3544.AW

The 1st bunch were located in C:\TDSSKiller_Quarantine\ so I assume they are malware I elected to be "cured", ie. 'false positives'. Since instructions here say to cure rather than delete, there they sit. Or, should I now delete them?

After seeing the Java related objects, I checked and saw I had the older Java version. Removed using Add/Remove Programs then downloaded the latest version. Also went to Java console and cleared the cache.

thnx

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I'll be addressing you by your username, if you'd like me to address you by something else, please let me know!

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)

    • Because of this, you must reply within 3 days failure to reply will result in the topic being closed! I like chocolate chip cookies.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system or even taking your computer into a repair shop.

    • Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data and have means of backing up your data available.

____________________________________________________

It appears you're infected with an infection known as ZeroAccess.

ZeroAccess (Max++) Rootkit (aka: Sirefef) is a sophisticated rootkit that uses advanced technology to hide its presence in a system and can infect both x86 and x64 platforms. ZeroAccess is similar to the TDSS rootkit but has more self-protection mechanisms that can be used to disable anti-virus software resulting in "Access Denied" messages whenever you run a security application. For more specific information about this infection, please refer to:

NEXT:

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

Hello SweetTech,

Thanks for helping me out here, I've done what I can but definitely need a higher power on this one!

1. Your instructions say no zip attachments but these logs triggered the "Your post is too long" error, so multiple replies are my answer. No other questions (yet).
2. aswMBR scan ran fine, log attached.
3. FSS scan ran fine, log attached.
4. OTL scan ran fine, logs attached.
5. While I still have issues, the laptop seems to be booting up and running fine, with all (I think) services restored after the first few fix attempts. I'll use the current status as our baseline and mention any change noticed as we move along. I do have another rdesktop available if necessary.

Again, I appreciate your time and talent!

Hi dholly!

Not a problem! I'm glad to be of assistance! :)

1. Your instructions say no zip attachments but these logs triggered the "Your post is too long" error, so multiple replies are my answer. No other questions (yet).

Okay not a problem, I typically prefer to have the logs posted directly in the thread, as it makes it much easier for me to research them, but if you encounter issues trying to post one, you can go ahead and attach it. That won't be a problem.

5. While I still have issues, the laptop seems to be booting up and running fine, with all (I think) services restored after the first few fix attempts. I'll use the current status as our baseline and mention any change noticed as we move along. I do have another rdesktop available if necessary.

Okay, thanks for the update. :)

It looks like aswMBR found a file that appears to be infected. We'll address it shortly.

Questions:
Do you recall opening this port;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"80:TCP" = 80:TCP:*:Enabled:HTTP

Do you recognizes these 2 files?

Howdy ST, sorry to miss you last night.

1. Was able to accomplish all your tasks without the house burning down. I see the Rootkit.ZeroAccess has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack. Time to go Secret Agent on that bad boy!

2. Negative to all three of your questions.

3. OTL fix ran smoothly, log attached.

4. ComboFix ran smoothly it would appear. Did d/l and install the Recovery Console successfully. Rebooted and Auto Scan started at least twice that I saw. I had MSE disabled but did allow pev.3XE through the Zone Alarm firewall when prompted. Log attached.

5. Laptop seems to be running ok, no big change immediately apparent.

thnx

Hi dholly!

Not a problem!

1. Was able to accomplish all your tasks without the house burning down. I see the Rootkit.ZeroAccess has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack. Time to go Secret Agent on that bad boy!

That's great! Glad to hear that!

2. Negative to all three of your questions.

Okay, I'm going to clean those entries up then.

4. ComboFix ran smoothly it would appear. Did d/l and install the Recovery Console successfully. Rebooted and Auto Scan started at least twice that I saw. I had MSE disabled but did allow pev.3XE through the Zone Alarm firewall when prompted. Log attached.

Perfect! Pev.3xe is a file that's related to ComboFix, so you were correct in allowing it through the firewall.

I'm going to grab a sample of those 2 batch files, before we remove them.

ComboFix Script
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic445045.html/page__view__findpost__p__2623891
KillAll::
Collect::[102]
C:\temp114.bat
C:\temp334.bat
ClearJavaCache::
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"80:TCP"=-

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. If ComboFix prompts you to update to the newest version, please allow it to do so. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

  • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

NEXT:

Security Check
Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NEXT:

Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:

1. Any comments or questions you may have that you'd like for me to answer in my next post to you.
2. ComboFix.txt log file.
3. MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log file.
4. ESET Online Scanner log file.
5. SecurityCheck log file.
6. An update on how your computer is currently running.

It would be helpful if you could answer each question in the order asked, as well as numbering your answers.

ST,

I'll post the ComboFix log for you now before I go on to the other scans.

After running and restart, I did receive a request to submit files for further analysis. May I presume that is OK?

thnx

Good Evening dholly!

After running and restart, I did receive a request to submit files for further analysis. May I presume that is OK?

Yes, please allow it to submit the files, it's going to submit those batch files to me, so that I can look at them closer.

MBAM ran fine, no malicious items detected.

Great! Glad to hear that!
