Hi Bleepers
I just spent the last week with one of your experts cleaning out redirector, root and trojan viruses and malaware. Two problems seem to remain that I understand are not related to the other problems. Can someone give me some guidance?
Fairly frequently I get the message upon opening Outlook 2003,the outlook files did not close properly and it takes over 5 minutes to do a scan before I can access outlook.
The other issue is that once few days I get a message that the global template has been changed. I do not save it but it is a nuisance. I know the template has something to do with word but I am not sure what is going on
Thanks for your guidance

The Outlook problem is usually caused by an add-in that does not shut down properly. AVG has an add-in for Outlook that often does this. Are you running AVG antivirus?

If so, then a way to avoid this is to either...

1. Close Outlook by choosing FILE > EXIT from the menu.

2. Leave Outlook open when you shutdown your computer, this will close all add-ins completely.

Just clicking the X in the upper right hand corner to close Outlook often causes the problem that you are having.

As for the Global Template modification, that could be an add-in also but there are soooooo many things that could legitimately do that, I'd have to look at your machine in person to tell you what it was (I'm kind of new to helping people via forums :) ) Maybe someone else can answer that.

Hope this helps
James

Hi

We need more details to help with the Global Template issue. When exactly does it happen. What are you doing when it happens. What add-ins are you using?

This is almost always an issue with a third party add-in.

Hi

Outlook (and other Microsoft products) are using Word for some of its functions (the Office programs interact seamlessly so you don't notice it). There is a setting in Word that will probably fix this.

Here are some instructions...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291352

Let us know if this works for you or not.

There were no auto macros

Did you try the first thing listed "The Prompt to save Normal template check box is selected"?

If you did, was it selected before you unselected it or was it already unselected?

James

EDIT: It may look like an Outlook problem because that's when you see it happen but it is an issue with Word. Outlook is using Word in your case.

No
I have been advised not to uncheck notification doesn't doing, so just means the template will be changed without notice.
and that leaves you open to a virus.

I understand :)

Okay, lets see if it is something in Outlook causing it or something in Word.

Close Outlook
Open Word
Make a new document and type anything in it and save it somewhere (you can delete it afterwards)
Close Word
Do you get the message to save changes to Normal.dat?

Hmmmm.... so it looks like something in Outlook is doing it.

You are using Outlook 2003 which is the last Outlook that gives you an option to use Word as the editor for messages (2007 and 2010 don't give you a choice and use Word by default).

There are two things we can try to narrow down the possibilities of what is editing your global template for Word.

1. Just turn off Word as the editor in Outlook. This might reduce functionality that you want to have, though.

In Outlook go to TOOLS>OPTIONS and then click the Mail Format tab.
Clear the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages check box.

See if the message to save changes to the global template goes away.

2. Check which Add ins are installed in Outlook (I think you checked the Add ins for Word but not Outlook, correct me if I'm wrong)

Start Outlook 2003.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Other tab click Advanced Options
there are two buttons to look at the different addins installed

COM Add-ins.

Add-In Manager.

Are there any addins listed that you think might change your editing settings each time you run them?

James

Yes there are addins in outlook
add in
Google desk top seach
Exchange Extensions property page
Comms
Google calender synch (not checked)
Google desktop tool bar
Itunes Outlook addin
Right now I am trying to figure out exactly what causes the message it does not always happen
