Whenever a major search engine is used the results are redirected to 7search or other unwanted sites.

I know this sounds like thregularlr old 7search redirect; however, nothing has been able to find the issue on this PC. I've tried Norton, AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy, 7search removal tools, and even PC Pitstop. I've also used several "helps" to remove it manually; however, nothing has been found in the registry.

Any help you can give in solving the mystery is very much appreciated.

Good evening. :)

Download aswMBR.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • When prompted "Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" click No .
  • Click the Scan button to, well, start the scan - obvious really!
  • Once the scan reports "Scan finished successfully" click Save log.
  • On my system it offers to save it to the Desktop, which may or may not be it's default behaviour, but it's as handy a place as any.
  • You'll also see a file called MBR.dat appear as well - this is a backup that it created, just in case it's needed. Keep it handy for now.

I'd like the contents of aswMBR.txt in your next reply, if you'd be so kind.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Hey, thanks! It may not seem like it, but I really did put a lot of work into this. Thanks to you, it's fixed. I don't need to post the log. The Avast scan found and removed the rootkit. It was the same found in AVG; however, it seems that AVG didn't actually remove it. Norton and Microsoft didn't find it at all. I may have to reconsider what I think of Avast.

As this issue appears to have been resolved, this thread is now closed.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
