I had help about a month ago from someone in the "Am I Infected Forum". I had first posted in here and my topic was moved to there. The person helped me and said my computer was clean and to start a new topic in here. I did not have the blue screen for a couple of weeks so I did not start a new topic. In the past two weeks it has happend numerous times again. I am worried it's about to crash. Here is the link to the previous topic where I had help. It has my system info and such. Thanks so much!!

Can you provide some info by following these directions?

Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html .

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.

When autoscan is done (screen comes up), click Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.

Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

I think we have a good case for collecting some more information about what might be going on here.

:step1: Please follow the instructions: BSOD Posting Instructions: Windows 7 - Vista

(Note: When you run BSOD_Windows7_Vista_v2.64_jcgriff2_.exe, it will also run autoruns.exe ... and both need to be in the same location!)
... with one exception in the following line:
  • "4. Zip up the entire output folder + PERFMON and attach the zip file to your next post."
The BC forums will allow a total attachment size of only 512 kb (and what you need to attach will exceed this limit). Please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file. I will have a look at the contained information and see if I can shed some light on your BSOD issue.

See the suggestions in the following links for recommendations on file sharing websites:
  • http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/15-great-free-online-file-sharing-alternatives/
  • http://www.smashingapps.com/2008/08/28/5-best-free-file-hosting-services-to-store-your-files.html

:step2: Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.
  • It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.

:step3: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click Go.
When the scan is finished, a text file will open in a Notepad window.
  • Copy the entire contents of the Notepad window, and paste in your reply.
(Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.)

===========================
I suspect that there may be a problem with the hard drive.

Test the hard drive. If you tell us the hard drive manufacturer's name (brand name) and model we can point you to the most appropriate diagnostic utility to use. It is best to use the hard drive manufacturer's own diagnostic utility, but Seagate's tool will work OK on most brands. The diagnostic tool is run from a bootable CD (Windows does not need to be working. The first two steps are done on a working computer, while the third step is to boot the ailing computer with the CD that you create in the first two steps.)

:step1: Please download SeaTools for DOS (CD) from Seagate's SeaTools for DOS web page

or use the following direct download link to download the latest version of SeaTools for DOS:
Download SeaTools for DOS ISO Image

The downloaded file name is SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO
:step2: Burn the downloaded .ISO image to a CD using the appropriate burning software.
  • If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...
    • Download and install ImgBurn.
Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.
    • Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.
    • Choose Write image file to disc.
    • Under Source, click on the Browse button: Navigate to and select the .ISO file that you wish to burn.
    • Place a check-mark in the box beside Verify.
  • Click Posted Image

When the CD has been burned and verified as successful, it will be bootable.

:step3: Boot from the CD.
  • (You may need to access the BIOS Setup Menu or the Boot Menu and change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • From Basic tests on the Main Menu, run the Short test and then the Long test.

(The long test will take some considerable time to complete.)
The results will be shown as either a PASS or FAIL.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive:
  • If so, go ahead and attempt to do so, but ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
Note: You may wish to view the following ...
Please let us know the results of the tests.

When you can, include the make and model number of the problematic hard drive. If you do choose to use SeaTools, you will see the model number (and maybe the make) when SeaTools first detects the hard drive.

Start, then perfmon/report is not coming up anything for me. Did I do something wrong?

I suspect that you did not leave a space between "perfmon" and "/report".

3. Run System Health Report -
START | type perfmon /report | save as HTML file

There appears to be a problem with the hard drive, in an area that the paging file (temporary memory) occasionally uses, causing consequent "memory corruption" issues.
This is causing your Windows system to crash occasionally.

Hard drive: Western Digital WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0 (SATA)
Check your system HDD with the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility ...

:step1: Go to the WD Scorpio Blue Downloads page and download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)
  • Unzip (right-click > Extract all) the file when you have downloaded it, to get to the .ISO image file.
(Read the instructions while you are there.)

:step2: If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...

  • (You may need to change the boot order to enable booting from CD before hard drive.)
  • Run the Short/Quick test and then the Long/Extended test.
There is a chance that during the Long test, you may be offered the opportunity to attempt repairs on the hard drive: If so, go ahead and attempt to do so ... BUT ... ONLY after backing up all important personal files.
  • Please let us know the results of the tests.
(If the WD diagnostic utility fails to work, then try the SeaTools diagnostic utility.)

I am trying to do this:

Go to the WD Scorpio Blue Downloads page and download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)
•Unzip (right-click > Extract all) the file when you have downloaded it, to get to the .ISO image file.
(Read the instructions while you are there.)

- I do not have an "Extract All" option. Mine says either "Extract to the specific folder", or "Extract w/o confirmation". Those are the only extract options when I right click. I tried the first option and then clicked on it. A black box came up but it never did anything. I know I am difficult :) I don't do this kind of stuff...ever. Thanks.

I do not have an "Extract All" option. Mine says either "Extract to the specific folder", or "Extract w/o confirmation".

My apology for that little oversight: Those instructions are applicable to an XP system, and I think the menu in Vista is a little different, but I still don't see the two options you report when I look on a Vista machine that I have here.

However, "Extract to the specific folder" should be fine. That should extract the .zip file so that you can now see/access the .ISO file (although you may not be seeing the extensions if your system is configured to hide the extensions).

When you have the .ISO file, you then need to download and install ImgBurn. Once you have done that, you can use ImgBurn to write the .ISO image file to the CD. You can do it as I have instructed previously ... or you can right-click on the .ISO file and choose "Burn using ImgBurn".

You wrote: "I tried the first option and then clicked on it. A black box came up but it never did anything."
I cannot follow what you might have done here/what you might mean.

Downloaded ImgBurn and then put in a cd. It did not do anything. I tried a few times. It put a "Genio" icon on my desktop and that just takes me to Yahoo? I'm confused?!?!

Please use this direct download link to download ImgBurn:

Mirror 7 - Provided by ImgBurn

When you have downloaded it to your computer, then double-click on it to install ImgBurn on your computer.

Then use ImgBurn in the manner instructed earlier to burn the WD diagnostic utility to a CD.

One more question. I got all the way to the part on image burn where I select the file. It says there is no .ISO file. What file am I burning?
