My wife laptop is giving her fits. It's an IBM think pad running XP W/ SP3.

I know she has gotten the redirect virus but also is constantly getting this AVG resident shield alert which shows multiple "threats" and each time they appear different.

I've run a virus scan as well as Malware bites but while some threats are detected and dealt with these 2 persist.

I've also tried running Rkill before Malware bytes but no luck.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.

In MiniToolbox you forgot to checkmark:
List content of Hosts
Please redo.

Then you seem to have one system file corrupted/infected.

Please run Farbar Service Scanner FSS).
Type the following in the edit box after "Search:".

afd.sys

Click Search Files button and post the log (FSS.txt) it makes to your reply.

Download following batch file: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/0/97-fix.bat
Restart computer in Safe Mode.
Double click on downloaded file to run the fix.

Command prompt window will open.
You should see following message:
"1 file(s) copied"
In that case press any key to close command prompt window.
If you see any error message let me know.

Disregard any Windows warnings.

Restart computer in normal mode.

Next, we have "hosts" file missing.

Download following "hosts"(zipped) file: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/0/hosts_xp.zip
Unzip it.
Copy hosts file found inside.
Open Windows Explorer and paste hosts file to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.

When done, post new FSS log and re-run MiniToolbox with only this item checked:

Good news :)

You have 4 registry keys missing which affect Windows updates and Security Center.

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-restore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/



Please go to Start=>Run (alternatively use Windows key+R), type regedit and click OK.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root
Right-Click Root and select Permissions...
Under Security type while Everyone is selected put a check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control.
Click Apply and OK.
Download XP.zip file from here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Unzip downloaded file.
You'll find several files inside.
Double-click legacy_wuauserv.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click legacy_wscsvc.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click wuauserv.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double-click wscsvc.reg and confirm the prompt.

Please go back to the the Root key again while Everyone is selected remove check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control and close the registry.
Restart computer.
See if you can access Windows updates and Security Center.
Post new FSS log.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Well, performed both and both produced some "threats" that were cleaned but something I did wrong trying to name the file for the Eses log cuased it not to save.

I do know there were 4 items but not what they were.

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

5. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

6. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

7. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

8. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

9. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program.
